A chat in Fountain Square / Conversas no Largo da Fonte

What other place would lead to a moment of peaceful conviviality among the inhabitants of some village except this one, where there are stone benches, the freshness of a fountain - certainly more appreciable in the hot months - and the quietness of a sunny afternoon, a precious commodity these days? In one hand, children play and the animals rest. In the other hand, news traffic takes place, an always bustling activity in these small locations, and "today's special" will certainly be the event that led to poor Mrs. Zezinha to use a plaster shoe that wasn't, for sure, purchased in the weekly market...

Dawn of evening / Alvorada do entardecer

Here's another of my "uncommitted" works, just an excuse to play with light and shadows ... I gave it the name I gave because I like that word game, but also because it is the title of a song I like. So, because I can't say anything on the subject, we will be uncertain if the shepherd is heading for one more day with his inseparable herd, or if is back from that same journey... In one way or another, these are two moments of special magic though, not without guilt from my cozy pillow, I'm much more familiar with the second one.

Antecipating the mountains / Antecipando as montanhas

A trip to the mountains in order to fill the eyes with the landscapes of their unique places, is always a special occasion: Not that they are too far - less than two hours by car - but the current cost of living does not allow this invigorating pleasure to be more frequent. So, I have many times to content myself with the about 25 miles distant contemplation from the Braga area, a city where I go often. A feeling that I have tried to express in this work where, as always, everything is invented but "based on a true story”, especially with regard to the highest mountain you see in the background, inspired by an old acquaintance, the Louriça peak in the Serra Amarela, which I know since younger as "The Antennas" because of the TV relay in its top, and which I had the good fortune to see this morning from distance, completely painted in white.

Somewhere in a village / Algures numa aldeia

A simple village scene, one of those villages with houses built in shale, nogging and slate roofs that can still be found, sometimes very hidden in mountains as Freita, São Macário or Alvão, among others, not to mention the green Galicia ... The difference is that in those, the real ones in which real people still persists, is it more likely that the smoke will escape today from many chimneys, so cold it may be felt there, perhaps even with the company of a white robe.

An almost empty square / Um largo quase vazio

On weekdays, small country towns and cities seem bustling with movement, with the people from there and the people of neighboring villages who move there in a variety of tasks. And yet there seems to be a time, more for the afternoon, when everything settles down, and even the most spacious of the squares is suddenly empty ... Or almost. The person we see on the steps may have been the most recently served in the "wine chemist" at the corner and, perhaps for that reason, managed to find enough talent to sit in the only place where an orange risk to fall in his head.

Crossing a bridge is no longer a trivial matter when this simple act takes place in these beautiful rural bridges, those same which, because of their ancient air, soon receive the "seal" of "roman", despite they're often medieval or later ... Rather than their ancestry, I am interested in the way they are dressed, with moss and countless other plants and vegetables that decorate all the stones of these waterfront places, giving them that distinctive romantic atmosphere. I hope this may never be lost by the global warming that, they say, will have a particular and ominous impact on our country: Dried pebbles built across other dried pebbles may be something that would be funny on the moon, but not in northern Portugal.

Chapel in a village / Capela numa aldeia

What is picking up that entertained character we see on the left of a picturesque chapel in a far village? Probably that same question is being made by the neighbor in the balcony, but the answer may be hidden forever in any corner of that small square immersed in the calm of the afternoon: The characters of these small paintings do not always bother to give the one who paints them an account of what they are doing ...

My connection is so bad today that posting this sketch is a question of luck, taking the chance of a scarce instant of activity. Internet in Portugal is like the food in some snobish restaurants: Outrageously expensive, served in tiny portions and never satisfying despite all attempts to make it look pretty.

A piece of sunshine / Um pedaço de sol

And because this aspiring painter spends his life hitting the same key, here we are back to the theme of the sunshine in the cold season... In this case, covering with light some colored and uncertain location, and giving a chance for some activities that don't result too practical under the rain.

Some days are really wet / Há dias mesmo molhados

Some days are really wet ... And not because it rains tempestuously. She falls, instead, slowly, insistently, until it seems that nothing in the world is dry. Fortunately there are some nice stone cottages like this, small, but for that same reason radiating comfort and warmth. If I were that boy, this would be sufficient excuse to invent a cold in order to subtract myself to a damp day of school. Now that I'm more like a big boy, do not need to invent anything, because the so-called cold arrived yesterday and is still here to last.

Pruning and chatting / A podar e a conversar

Now is that time of the year when many good people get perched on the top of a ladder - if the vines are overhead - and is committed to the task of preparing them for the coming year: A mix of deciduous leaves and endless twigs disappears, leaving only what is of twisted and sculptural interest to keep for the new cycle in which all will resume. Pruning the vines requires wisdom and may have its techniques and its secrets, and those will certainly be at the knowledge of the gentleman who holds forth below, showing his supposed skills to the gentleman above, who listens patiently while thinking "all right, but if you think you know so much you should be up here in my place! ".

The ephemeral heat / O calor efémero

Sunny days in Autumn and Winter have a special taste ... Those days are ideal for a person to discover new places, landscapes, villages ... Everything is presented with a special light and sharpness, giving the desire to enjoy every moment because there will be not so many as that. So do the cats, delighting with the same ephemeral heat that plagues the poor old woman, requiring her to put the knitted cardigan over the head while climbing a street gasping and dropping a "oh Jesus" every five steps...

Life among the stones / A vida entre as pedras

It's something I don't cease to admire: Mountains made of rock, with more stones than grass, and yet some people could turn parts of such a harsh territory into a terrain of culture and a place to live. Each of the stones that make up the walls, houses and other buildings, often without any mortar, is one of a kind, a monument of effort, a work of art embellished by time, a planet for thousands of tiny beings. It's one of the things that I most like to paint - on the paper, of course, not painting the stones themselves!

A good place to stop / Um bom sítio para parar

Rest from the climb, enjoy the silence, reflect ... I do not know what stopped this character at this exact point, where he seems to indulge in contemplation of the landscape that he's likely to always have known, but I don't think this is too important: Places and people coming out of the imagination are blessed with a life much more carefree than the ones from the real world, simply because they are not required to make sense.

"A Transmontana"

For these two friends who meet at the doorstep of "Transmontana, an old and cozy eatery well known to those who like to eat well for little money, I guess this will be a well spent time for nice conversation among the good snacks that are served there, many with ingredients from the original land of the owners and with wine of the same origins. It seems that I can see and smell the plate of ham that will "open the hostilities" ... Aack! Should not have written this post before lunch!
Note: "Transmontana" means original from Trás-Os-Montes, an absolutely fascinating province in North Eastern Portugal, which name can be translated as "Behind the Mountains".

Small house and big house / Casa pequena e casa grande

I miss these winding roads that follow the contour of the mountains, cross rivers, valleys, revealing wonders at the end of each curve. Houses, fields, rivers, meadows, cliffs, villages ... In a small section, hundreds of inspiring pictures, changing color as the months go passing. I miss to go through them early in the morning, stopping at a random site like the one in this picture, and feel the fresh air with the cascading water as background music. Between the old manor house and the humble cottage on the opposite bank, which would be the best shelter to enjoy all this? I prefer the tiny one, but wouldn't mind to use the larger to hang my umbrella.

A distant waterfall / Uma cascata distante

There is a certain amount of fantasy in this picture: Although in my country there are several alluring places where the water rushes down the mountain slopes, none of them - perhaps with this exception - it will make it from such a high point. So let's assume that the spectacle offered here, which brings an extra dose of interest to an old village, was the result of a couple of weeks of heavy rain.

A beautiful gray day / Um belo dia cinzento

The gray day presented in this work doesn't differ so much from the one this friend of yours finds now on the other side of the window, except for the fact that here it is expected to be aggravated by a storm. However we must correct an injustice: Why only we say "it's a nice day" when the sun shines, if there is also a beauty of its own, not necessarily sad or melancholic, in these cloudy days that enliven the tones of Autumn, the green fields and the stones in the houses and in the roads?
