Ligeiramente maior / Slightly bigger

An evening more extended in time allowed me a work of slightly bigger dimensions, and this is what came out.

Moleskine

This happy and colorful mess signs the moment when I started to enjoy this sketchbook, which has been taking place quickly between my favorites.
Among other things I could mention, I like the liveliness of the colors, considering that they tend to fade a little in other sketchbooks not specifically indicated for watercolor.
Therefore, and after what I wrote some time ago, looks like that from now I'll have to review my sketchbook priorities...

Cadernos / Sketchbooks - 6

Caderno Lana

Lana sketchbook
Had this one at home for a couple of years, and started it only recently. I know the brand, but don't have any other reference apart from its name in the back cover, and haven't ever seen it again, both on shops or the web, so it may no longer be manufactured. It's almost square-shaped, the cover with a nice marbled effect (You can see it on top left in this post's first picture). I don't remember how expensive it was, but surely has worth the investment, as it is quite pleasant to draw and coloring with watercolors. It also spreads easily in a moleskinish way for those who like to work in double pages. In short, a great piece of sketchbook!

Like any sketch or study, the drawing for this watercolor was made directly on the paper, and not in a separate one to be later transposed, as I used to make before.

Since I started to work on sketchbooks, these are the two pencil-only drawings I made so far. Two things distinguish them from the “Today's sketches” I used to post: The first is that unlike these, those ones were specifically intended to be the base for subsequent watercolors; The second is that I always used the same pencil, a very soft one, forcing me to enhance the contrast after scanning; Here, however, I used two pencils of different grades, something I've been taking as a habit, which means this time didn't have to “cheat”...

With about one month of separation, these two sketches were done on location at the same place, taking advantage of two rare opportunities for so. Almost a true double premiere: Apart some few recent notes within walls, I may have done something similar less than half-dozen times in my life, the last before these surely more than ten years ago. By temperament, I'm more into the lonely snug of a working table indoors, preferably with cats as the only spectators.
Apart from that, this was something I wanted to do for a long time, even if both experiences were quite uncomfortable for me, but I have a hint that it's why these things are called “getting out of the comfort zone”. Feeling uneasy, I worked with the rush of an author of suspicious acts, taking about forty minutes on each attempt. The expectable insecurity of a beginner was joined by the freezing morning cold on the second one, the materials good but not yet the most suitable, the working positions far different from the usual and, as a a perfect amateur refinement, the pretentious ability of choosing a subject difficult as hell, convinced that it would be piece of cake...
Considering the obvious: Any journey starts with a step – two in this case – and you will get somewhere only after many miles of practice. The truth is that after some time on both experiences, I conclude they may have not been as bad, otherwise I wouldn't be looking forward into a third, at the same place or elsewhere.

Cadernos / Sketchbooks - 5

Moleskine watercolor sketchbook, 21x13cm.
The first results, including the one above, didn't encourage me, and so remained for more than a dozen pages. Despite all my efforts, I wasn't finding anything especially exciting on this paper, although also not exactly a torture; It was just something tasteless. At this point, and classifying as a learned lesson the substantial investment with little return, the poor sketchbook ended among many others in the cabinet. And if firstly I attributed this failure to my old dislike of “cult” brands, especially those who make themselves well paid for products superior only in the way they're marketed, later I found myself thinking that being this one so popular after all, with so many dedicated sites and blogs, and so widely used by many successful artists, it should be more likely that the default was mine...
A few weeks later, being in the mood for a change, I decided to give it another try. By that time I was already using some watercolors better than the ones of the first attempts, and suddenlly all became clear...

The color brightness, the transparency, the pleasant tactile sensation, the more or less controllable unpredictability, everything seemed to be there this time, with results much more within expectations and, most important, everything done with renewed pleasure. Sometimes it isn't this material that is good or bad, it's just a question of putting toghether the right materials at the right time.
With my first unwilling now withdrawn, and despite not being yet an unconditional conversion, the renegade sketchbook finally became part of my choices even if the price, according to my modest needs, doesn't help to make it the first one.

Pequeno estudo / Small study

Unlike the previous ones, this quick study wasn't made in a sketchbook, but in the same Fabriano watercolor paper I use in my more traditional works.
