Uma casa ao entardecer / A house at the evening

This is one of those scenes that leaves very little to be written, because it appears to be descriptive enough... Or is the lack of imagination of the one who writes, which will lead to the same. So I'll just write a few lines about the reason for choosing this subject, not an easy task... The moment of choice itself, from a pile of sketches at home, is one of the most exciting of the whole process, and there is always something to match the mood of the moment. In this case, after inspecting one by one, I selected four candidates, and since any of them seemed desirable, I had to draw lots and choose one with closed eyes and then... The lucky one was maybe the "least desirable of the most desirables". At this point I usually cheat and restart the “lottery”, but this time decided to be a good boy and, as a reward, I was very reasonably satisfied with the result.

The day is falling and the good old man is still struggling with a generous bunch of logs, not being perceptible what he's actually doing, but with the certainty that the large chimney of the house will have something to do with the ultimate goal ...
I've always wanted to portray this part of the day, as special as ephemeral: When the sun has disappeared over the horizon but the daylight has not yet bid farewell, and a beautiful atmosphere of peculiar hues hangs in the air. Despite the darkness beginning to dominate, there are things that stand out and get special beauty in such moments, and one of them is the beautiful stone of the houses, especially in certain regions of Alto Minho, where water abounds, and green is everywhere, painting such walls with beautiful tones. With this intoxicating green, the fumes that arise, the freshness and fragrance of the air, wich other but this could be my favorite location?

Aldeia, linha, estrada e taberna / Village, rail, road and tavern

The theme of "wine pharmacies", with its handful of faithful customers at the door, is more than applicant in these parts, as can be seen here or here, and certainly it isn't the last time this predictable and repetitive friend of yours will be tackling this issue. But, as soon as the sketch for this work was born, I immediately realized it wouldn't take long to move on to painting. I was especially attracted to this little corner at the left, the entry for the tavern, and not because I was dying of thirst... Just it seemed a cosy and welcoming retreat from the surrounding world that, as you can see, seems awfully busy.

Aldeia vista de cima / Village seen from above

As aldeias serranas!
The mountain villages! How many times have I written about them? They are my favorite subject to paint, and just don't do it more often because I have no memory for that, since it has to be recharged in situ at intervals, to observe more, to reveal details and corners, to surprise new angles. And so many are the mysteries of their ways of living that they could provide a lifetime of discoveries if these places, now in the twilight of their long existence, could manage to persist in time.
Last week I decided to put an end to a several months long fasting, and had a trip – a short one, as this is not a time for luxuries - in a certain and long learned "circuit of beauty", just to review, even by far, some of these wonders. This work, which began last Friday and was finished only yesterday, has been inspired in a very tiny part of the plenty with which my eyes rejoiced. It took much longer than usual to be made but, unlike what happened before leading to groans and lamentations, this time the task didn't turn painful or never-ending, quite the opposite: I had a good time from the first line to the last brush stroke. There is no doubt that, when working from fresh memories, things go the other way!

Vem aí o autocarro! / The bus is coming!

A hundred percent rural atmosphere, but not far from a city, and the proof is the imminent arrival of the bus that leads to downtown. I was always curious about these urban bus lines that departed from the city center, ran through its busiest streets and slowly went up entangled in the narrow roads, stopped in time, that made its suburbs. I'm using the past tense, not because the suburbs and the bus lines have disappeared, but because this fascinating passage from one world to another, in most cases is no longer perceptible.
This scene was imagined as taking place in a day without sunshine. However, it looked so sadly washed out in the end, that I chose to add the shadows as final touch ... It was like giving life to a dead!

Entardecer / Late afternoon

Not much to say about this simple entrance of a village at dusk .. Just a willingness to work a little on these luminosities with a charm of their own, and celebrate that magical time of day, one of my favorites, not meaning that I especially like the fact that from now it takes place more and more earlier.
As the nostalgia of these not-so-far places has been hitting, I decided to indulge myself by taking one of the next days to visit some of them, and so give a treat to my thirsty views, and a bit of moisten to the dry sponge in which my soul always turns when too much time goes without being fed with beautiful images and inspiring horizons. Can't wait for it: Even bought the bread for the sandwiches!

How fascinating are these porches, as well as balconies and all sorts of attachments in rustic houses: In stone, iron, but especially in wood, with its crooked and shaky air, but built with an old wit and wisdom that seem to ensure that many tasks will take place over generations until finally, by way of an eventual abandonment only, they fulfill what was until then no more than a gentle warning from the laws of physics.
Gentle was not the battle I had with this work: Looking at the sketch, I thought from the beginning that it would be "piece of cake"... In fact, it came to a point when nothing seemed to go well and I felt to have lost control of what was doing. It was even torn from its peaceful slumber watercolor pad to spend a night in the "failures" folder, as I decided to let it go and start something else the next day. However, it was rescued from "jail" after a good night's sleep and, more by stubbornness than conviction, I ended up completing it. Now, two days are gone and I like it ...
I'm not very fond of persisting in a work when it starts to go astray, or when pleasure gives place to torture, and I have that “failures” folder generously stuffed as a proof. However, I'm beginning to realize that when my intuition tells me that in some cases there is still room for a second chance - and the same happened with this one - I rarely regret returning to the fight.

The corner of the secrets / A esquina dos segredos

Here's an image that takes us to the days that every "little bastard”, instead of staying plugged in at home, lived endless adventures on the street with friends, something that fortunately still happened to my generation, perhaps one of the latest... Sticks and stones, balls, bottle caps or any other unfathomable object, everything served for long hours of entertainment, and the title of this work would no longer make sense if what holds the attention of this trio and their four-legged companions was revealed here.
You can see that this final version is "mirrowed" from yesterday's sketch: It doesn't happen too often, but when I transfer the drawing, it happens to me sometimes to look at its reverse on the transparent paper, and find it more interesting than the original conception. The funny thing is that in terms of sun and shades, my mind doesn't make the same reversal... Curious.
Enfim, curiosidades.

The old red windmill / O velho catavento vermelho

The old red windmill stands in place for many decades, compounding with its grace a beautiful landscape may be not far from the coast. Probably it is no longer the main water supplier to the elegant tiled villa, but still seems to be cherished as a family member. Not a unique case, as fortunately I have seen, in my small trips, many other "iron flowers" that, despite their age, are not less well treated than the others that grow in their gardens. And hopefully I'll continue to see them after the windstorm that takes place at the time of writing, with a strenght that seems to say that only the strongest will resist...
