Torres Vedras - 4º Encontro Internacional de Desenho de Rua / 4th International Urban Sketch Meeting

Tal como no ano passado, estive em Torres Vedras para participar neste que é provavelmente o maior e mais emblemático dos encontros regulares no nosso território. E não obstante a ele acorrerem algumas dezenas de sketchers, a sensação não deixa de ser a de estarmos numa reunião de família, com todo o calor e intimismo que daí emana.
Um fim-de-semana a desenhar intensamente entre amigos que partilham a mesma paixão, aprendendo, partilhando, visitando alguns dos muitos e interessantes lugares destas belíssimas e surpreendentes terras.
Uma vez mais, a organização do André e sua equipa a fazer-nos sentir em casa. Obrigado, um grande abraço e até para o ano!
Just like last year, I've been in Torres Vedras to participate in this meeting, probably the biggest and best known among all that occur in our territory. And despite the fact that some dozen sketchers flock to it, the sensation is still that of being in a family reunion, with all the warmth and intimacy that emanates from it.
A weekend of intensive sketching among friends who share the  same passion, learning and sharing, visiting some of the many and interesting places of this gorgeous and surprising territory.
Once more. the organization by André and its team makiing us feel at home. Thank you, a big hug and until next year!!

9th Urban Sketchers International Symposium

Tive a sorte de ser correspondente no 9º Simpósio Internacional de Urban Sketchers, que teve lugar no Porto entre 18 e 21 do corrente mês, e juntou na cidade mais de 800 desenhadores de 46 nacionalidades.
Tendo sido uma experiência difícil de descrever por palavras, deixo aqui alguns registos de entre muitos que fiz no âmbito do meu trabalho.
O resultado final, assim como o das minhas duas colegas, a Marina e a Rita, duas pessoas talentosas e extraordinárias que passo a contar entre os meus amigos, pode ser visto aqui.
I had the fortune of being a correspondent in the 9th Urban Sketchers International Symposium that took place in Porto between 18 and 21 of the current month, and gathered more than 800 sketchers from 46 countries. 
Having been an experience hard to describe by words, I leave some sketches among many I did in the scope of my work. 
The final result, as well as the one of my fellow colleagues Marina and Rita, two talented and extraordinary persons I count among my friends from now on, can be seen here.

Parabéns à cidade que no próximo ano vai receber o 9º Simpósio Internacional de Urban Sketchers, e para todos os que trabalharam para que tal fosse possível.

Dois livros / Two books

Normalmente fértil em actividades e acontecimentos, o panorama do “Urban Sketching” nacional assim o foi especialmente nas últimas semanas devido ao lançamento de dois magníficos livros. Tive o prazer de colaborar em ambos com alguns desenhos; Aqui os apresento, pela ordem com que me chegaram às mãos:
Usually fertile in activities and happenings, the national Urban Sketching scene has been especially so in the last few weeks due to the launch of two magnificent books. I had the pleasure of collaborating on both with some sketches. Here they are by the order they came to my hand:


PORTUGAL POR/BY URBAN SKETCHERS
Editado pela Zest Books, este álbum de 272 páginas reúne trabalhos de cerca de oitenta desenhadores que retratam todo o território continental e ilhas, numa fascinante e variada mistura de estilos.
Edited by Zest Books, this 272 page album collects works from around eighty sketchers, covering all the national territory plus islands, in an fascinating and varied mix of styles.


Contribuí com três quartos de dúzia de desenhos, de Braga e mais alguns lugares (foto de telemóvel ranhoso).
I contributed with three quarters of a dozen sketches of Braga and some places more (lousy mobile phone photo).


Na semana passada o livro foi apresentado no programa “Olá Maria” do Porto Canal, onde esteve presente o editor Nuno Seabra, a minha mui talentosa colega Miú, e ainda um careca irrequieto sentado entre os dois. Pode ver-se aqui (ao minuto 31).
Last week this book was presented in a program of a local Porto TV station, with the presence of Nuno Seabra, the editor, my very talented fellow sketcher Miú, and a restive bald man seated between them. It can be seen here (from minute 31).

Este livro é o fruto do inesquecível Encontro Nacional aqui decorrido em Setembro do ano passado, de que se pode ver aqui o video.
This book is the fruit of the unforgettable National Sketch Meeting that took place in Porto last September, from which you can see the video here. 

Tanto um livro como o outro estão já disponíveis nas boas livrarias deste País; Se não encontrou, é porque poderá ter entrado por engano numa salsicharia, e então poderá encomendá-los directamente nas editoras, cujo link coloquei acima nos respectivos nomes.
Parabéns a todos: Aos editores pelo árduo trabalho que tiveram, e aos restantes desenhadores pelo lindo sarilho em que me meteram, porque agora não consigo parar de folhear e apreciar todos os seus trabalhos em ambas as obras.
Both books are already available in all the country's good bookshops. If you can't find them, you may have entered by mistake in a sausage shop, and then you can order them directly from the publishers, whose links I have put above in their names.

Três desenhos feitos durante o Encontro Nacional USkP "Vamos desenhar o Porto", que teve lugar nos passados dias 17 e 18 e juntou umas boas dezenas de sketchers vindos de todo o País.
Só pude estar presente no primeiro dia, mas foi um dia inesquecível e muito feliz! Parabéns aos organizadores e patrocinadores por este espectacular evento, de que se podem ver fotos aqui.
Three sketches made during the National Meeting "Vamos desenhar o Porto" (let's sketch Porto), which took place last 17 & 18th September and gathered dozens of sketchers from all country. 
I could manage to be present only on the first day, but what a happy and unforgettable one! Congratulations to the organizers and sponsors for such a spectacular event, from which some pics can be seen here.

Fontainhas, Porto

Dois registos de uma agradável tarde em meados de Julho, na companhia de mais uns quantos cadernistas militantes. Estes encontros, que têm vindo a tornar-se regulares e onde o desenho é amplamente praticado e discutido, são uma refrescante pedrada no charco estagnado das minhas rotinas actuais.

Two records of a pleasant mid-July afternoon, in the company of some more fellow sketchers. These meetings, which are becoming regular, and where sketching is widely practiced and discussed, are a refreshing stone's throw in the stagnated puddle of my current routines.

8º Encontro dos Urban Sketchers Portugal Norte / Urban Sketchers Portugal Norte 8th Meeting.

Decorreu ontem em Braga o 8º Encontro dos Urban Sketchers Portugal Norte, ao qual tive o prazer de me associar, ainda que tardiamente, naquilo que foi para mim uma estreia.
Apesar de só há pouco mais de meio ano me dedicar à prática do desenho de observação em cadernos, desde há uns anos que acompanho com muito interesse as actividades, aquém e além-fronteiras, deste movimento artístico, seguindo alguns dos seus praticantes e mantendo ocasional contacto com outros através da blogosfera. Assim sendo, como resistir a um encontro tão "à porta de casa"?
O início foi de manhã, mas só após o almoço me poderia associar, acabando por perder uma parte desse tempo num inesperado episódio de desenho sobre o qual escreverei mais tarde, e outra parte à procura do grupo, que fui encontrar no Largo de S. João do Souto, já quase na recta final.
Houve ainda tempo para o desenho acima, entre apresentações, conversas várias, ambiente de excelente disposição e toda a curiosidade que resulta de conhecer pessoalmente quem partilha a paixão por esta viciante actividade.
Só posso agradecer a todos o caloroso acolhimento de que fui alvo, tão importante para um “bicho-do-mato” que se estreia; Agradeço também à Miú pelo convite inicial, e ao Tiago pelo convite para postar doravante no blogue dos Usk Portugal Norte.

The Urban Sketchers Portugal Norte 8th meeting took place yesterday in Braga and I had the pleasure to join, even if a bit later. This was a first time for me. 
Despite being practicing observation drawing in sketchbooks since only few more than six months, I've been following with interest this artistic movement's activities for a few years, within and outside borders, following some of its artists and keeping occasional contact with a few others through the blogosphere. How could I resist to a meeting so much "at the doorstep"?
It started in the morning, but only after lunch I was able to join, and ended up loosing part of that time in an unexpected sketching episode about which I will write later, and another part searching for the group, which I finally founded in São João do Souto square, already in the final stretch of the event. 
There was still time for the sketch above, among presentations, random conversations in a good mood atmosphere, and all the curiosity that comes out of meeting in person those who share the same passion for this addictive activity. 
I can't but be thankful to everyone for the warm reception, so important for an usually secluded first-timer; I also thank Miú for the initial invitation, and Tiago for his invitation to start posting in the Usk Portugal Norte blog.
