Life among the stones / A vida entre as pedras

It's something I don't cease to admire: Mountains made of rock, with more stones than grass, and yet some people could turn parts of such a harsh territory into a terrain of culture and a place to live. Each of the stones that make up the walls, houses and other buildings, often without any mortar, is one of a kind, a monument of effort, a work of art embellished by time, a planet for thousands of tiny beings. It's one of the things that I most like to paint - on the paper, of course, not painting the stones themselves!
É algo que não cesso de admirar: Montanhas feitas de rocha, com mais calhaus do que ervas, e no entanto houve quem conseguisse transformar partes de tão agreste território em terreno de cultivo e lugar para viver. Cada uma das pedras que compõem os muros, as casas e demais construções, muitas vezes sem qualquer argamassa, é um exemplar único, monumento de esforço, uma obra de arte embelezada pelo passar do tempo, um planeta para milhares de minúsculos seres. É das coisas que mais me agrada pintar – no papel, claro, não as próprias pedras!

A good place to stop / Um bom sítio para parar

Rest from the climb, enjoy the silence, reflect ... I do not know what stopped this character at this exact point, where he seems to indulge in contemplation of the landscape that he's likely to always have known, but I don't think this is too important: Places and people coming out of the imagination are blessed with a life much more carefree than the ones from the real world, simply because they are not required to make sense.
Descansar da subida, desfrutar do silêncio, reflectir... Não sei o que deteve este personagem neste preciso sítio, onde parece entregar-se à contemplação da paisagem que provavelmente conhecerá desde sempre, mas também não creio que isso seja demasiado importante: Os lugares e pessoas saídos da imaginação são abençoados com uma existência bem mais despreocupada do que os da vida real, pelo simples facto de estarem dispensados de fazer sentido.

"A Transmontana"

For these two friends who meet at the doorstep of "Transmontana, an old and cozy eatery well known to those who like to eat well for little money, I guess this will be a well spent time for nice conversation among the good snacks that are served there, many with ingredients from the original land of the owners and with wine of the same origins. It seems that I can see and smell the plate of ham that will "open the hostilities" ... Aack! Should not have written this post before lunch!
Note: "Transmontana" means original from Trás-Os-Montes, an absolutely fascinating province in North Eastern Portugal, which name can be translated as "Behind the Mountains".
Para estes dois amigos que se encontram à porta da "Transmontana", uma velha e acolhedora casa de pasto bem conhecida de quem gosta de comer bem por pouco dinheiro, adivinha-se um bem passado instante de conversa entre os bons petiscos que ali se servem, muitos deles com matéria-prima da terra de origem dos proprietários e regados com pinga de iguais origens. Até parece que consigo ver e cheirar o prato de presunto que vai "abrir as hostilidades"... Ora bolas! Não devia ter escrito este "post" antes de almoçar!

Small house and big house / Casa pequena e casa grande

I miss these winding roads that follow the contour of the mountains, cross rivers, valleys, revealing wonders at the end of each curve. Houses, fields, rivers, meadows, cliffs, villages ... In a small section, hundreds of inspiring pictures, changing color as the months go passing. I miss to go through them early in the morning, stopping at a random site like the one in this picture, and feel the fresh air with the cascading water as background music. Between the old manor house and the humble cottage on the opposite bank, which would be the best shelter to enjoy all this? I prefer the tiny one, but wouldn't mind to use the larger to hang my umbrella.
Já tenho saudades destas estradas serpenteantes que acompanham o contorno dos montes, cruzam rios e vales, e desvendam maravilhas ao final de cada curva.. Casas, campos, rios, prados, penedos, aldeias... Num pequeno troço, centenas de quadros inspiradores, mudando de cor à passagem dos meses. Tenho saudades de as percorrer de manhã bem cedo, parar num sítio ao acaso como este da imagem, e sentir o ar fresco com o cascatear da água como música de fundo. Entre o velho casarão senhorial e a humilde casa na margem oposta, qual seria o melhor abrigo para desfrutar de tudo isto? Eu cá preferia a “pequenota”, mas não me importava de usar a grande para pendurar o guarda-chuva.

A distant waterfall / Uma cascata distante

There is a certain amount of fantasy in this picture: Although in my country there are several alluring places where the water rushes down the mountain slopes, none of them - perhaps with this exception - it will make it from such a high point. So let's assume that the spectacle offered here, which brings an extra dose of interest to an old village, was the result of a couple of weeks of heavy rain.
Há uma certa dose de fantasia nesta imagem, porque embora no meu país existam bastantes e sedutores lugares por onde a água se precipita vencendo desníveis montanha abaixo, em nenhum deles - talvez com esta excepção - ela o fará de semelhante altura. Vamos pois partir do princípio de que o espectáculo aqui proporcionado, que traz uma dose extra de interesse a uma velha aldeia, foi o resultado de um par de semanas de chuva abundante.

Found this old sketch yesterday, in the middle of many others... Probably didn't like it at the time it was done, and put it away. Or maybe thought it was too similar to others I did at the time. Now, with the mind cleared from all that, finally decided I like it.
Encontrei este esboço já antigo no meio de outros... Provavelmente não gostei dele na altura em que o fiz, e pu-lo de parte. Ou então achei-o demasiado parecido com outros que fiz na altura. Agora, com a mente limpa de tudo isso, decidi finalmente que gosto dele.

A beautiful gray day / Um belo dia cinzento

The gray day presented in this work doesn't differ so much from the one this friend of yours finds now on the other side of the window, except for the fact that here it is expected to be aggravated by a storm. However we must correct an injustice: Why only we say "it's a nice day" when the sun shines, if there is also a beauty of its own, not necessarily sad or melancholic, in these cloudy days that enliven the tones of Autumn, the green fields and the stones in the houses and in the roads?
O dia cinzento que se apresenta neste trabalho não difere muito daquele que este vosso amigo encontra neste momento do lado de lá da janela, com a diferença de que por aqui se prevê agravado por um temporal. No entanto há que corrigir uma injustiça: Porque é que só dizemos “está um belo dia” quando o sol brilha, se também existe uma beleza própria, não necessariamente triste ou melancólica, nestes dias nublados que avivam os tons do Outono, o verde dos campos e a pedra das casas e calçadas?
