The meeting on Saturdays / O encontro dos Sábados

The idea for this work came after a short trip on a Winter Saturday morning, when crossing a village on the “border” between the Minho and Trás-Os-Montes, symbolized here by the marriage of the sober granite and the already visible appearance of “tabique”, the fine lightweight paneling, a marriage that I could really see there.
Despite having gone through that village without stopping, there were details that could not help but remember: The brightness of these special Saturdays in winter, the mentioned architectural details that invited for a longer stop, but above all the existing animation in the streets, where groups of neighbors stopped their tasks to chat, something that seemed to be part of their weekly routine.

A rural house / Uma casa rural

Nothing fascinates me more than these simple and crude houses, which can be found in many villages, but now with fewer people living on them. The way they blend with the landscape that surrounds them, makes them seem almost to be born spontaneously as any pine between rocks, although in reality they are are the result of a mixture of what the earth provides - wood, shale, granite, lime among others - and what people adds to it - ancient wisdom, intuition, ingenuity, practicality, aesthetics, and respect for resources.
Of course these days require different standards of comfort for those times when they were erected. Meeting them without destroying this legacy, and retaining much of the qualities mentioned above, seems to me a challenge a lot easier than it was for our ancestors to raise the walls...

Now here's one of those interesting buildings of urban feature, although they may also be found in some smaller towns and, because they have been built between the late 19th and early decades of the 20th century, are always in the middle of a kind of "sandwich"of uncertainty that for so many have been fatal, because they are not old enough to be considered "historical", nor sufficiently modern that one may assign any “pedigree” associated with who designed it... But since we're talking about sandwiches, the better we get into the "Buraco da Fonte", the “Eye of the Fountain”, old establishment that existed already in the house prior to the building, and give one a push, maybe of cod or liver, with the help of the nectar that comes out of the barrel.

The mountains behind / A serra por detrás

This work consists of two or three very simple things, starting with the house whose owner comes at the door with a bowl in hand with some uncertain purpose, and continuing in the narrow alley, certainly part of the artery network of some village, and that ends in a mountain road. And it's by that same alley, invaded by a cool shadow, that lurks a blue mountainous profile, one of those that acquire a particular beauty in these days when the first Summer temperatures start rehearsing... How many palaces and luxurious villas, thirty times more elaborate than this house so simple can have such a great and privileged company?

The village cafe / O café da aldeia

Not all villages can rely on this true institution that is the village cafe, or the simple tavern, or sometimes both in one, often joined by the "comércio", the shop where they sell some essential groceries. Some have had it all but no longer, due to depopulation. Others, more isolated, never had it, others even have more than one. The place of the image, since it is situated near a local road, can count on this refuge harbor that warms the soul in the Winter, and warms the heart in the Summer, when for some weeks it becomes the meeting point of those who had to live far away.

The house of the eyes / A casa dos olhos

Looking at this house, the kind of distinctive presence that beautify the heart of any village, you see well the reason why it has since ever been locally known as "home of the eyes”, given the curious layout of the side openings in the upper storey... Associations between house openings and our own faces are not uncommon, the combination window-door-window being the one that most lends to such reveries. In this case there is no "nose" or “mouth”, but does it matter in a face that offers so much for unveiling?

Pillory and house / Pelourinho e casa

It's not difficult to find a pillory a few centuries old in the heart of our towns and villages, as is the case here: More recent, but also old, is the house you see behind it, one of those houses that delight any newcomer, especially if well maintained, seeming to smile at their lively colors. Despite years and years that separate them, pillory and house seem to understand each other perfectly, and the square where both are would certainly lose all its interest if one of the two was missing.

The tower of Mirapencas / A torre de Mirapencas

Pleasant view is this turreted old manor, maybe older than it appears, since it may have undergone major changes around the second half of 19th century. Even in a day of leaden skies, one of those days that some obscure decree unfairly implanted in our minds as being sadder and less interesting than the sunny ones, its pink facade stands out with elegance through the great fields whose green is so insuperably accentuated precisely on these occasions.

By the look of the slopes where the vineyards are aligned in unmistakable terraces, it is more than certain that it was into the Douro that the imagination took us again... And it is because of those same slopes, in whose villages some of the most remarkable and beautiful homes of our traditional architecture were buit, that they finished positioning themselves in the most curious ways. In this case, the upstairs neighbor is not free from being taken by the strongly aromatic smoke of sardines that the downstairs neighbor is grilling on the stove. One of two things: Either he's complaining because the house and clothes will get soaked in those perfumes, or he's greeting for the happy idea, hoping to receive an invitation to share the delicacy.

Expectation / Expectativa

Personal memories are the basis of this work. Not that I ever lived in a crooked house near a railway, although certainly would have liked... But for this type of houses to be so present in the imaginarium, I may have noticed a few in some good memory trips already distant in time.
Really present, is the expectation of the train passage, with all the fascination that it always had on any child. A crescendo of enthusiasm from the still distant whistle until when, making wind on the face, the huge, black and smoky machine ran noisily before the eyes, tugging colored tons of iron and wood that would give rhythmic beats on the track. Brief seconds only, but how much adrenaline!!
