Morning light / Luz da manhã

The image of a village viewed from a high point, shining under the morning light against the huge counterfort of a nearby mountain, isn't ficticious, although the village that we see here is. Indeed, it is one of the most beautiful images that I retain from one of my trips to the region of the Peneda mountains, something I am always eager to repeat, and it was time to try something interesting with that tasty piece of memory.

A green land / Uma terra verde

The mountain scenery has a particular charm in some gray and wet days, especially now that Autumn has arrived. The meek donkey, the best of companions in those pathways difficult to access, brings in his back the fruitful result of a trip to the nearby chesnut trees ...
The inspiration for this work came, with a few adapting changes, from a neighboring land where the villages and their architectures and ways of life do not differ that much from my own: The beautiful Galicia, which I love as much as my own Country even if don't know it so well: I believe we all have a "Country of affections" whose boundaries not always coincide with the ones in the maps, and this green land in the north of Spain with a character of its own, and to which I am bound with tenuous ties of blood, is no doubt part of mine.
All this because of a powerful documentary I had the chance to watch recently, entitled "A aldea, o antigo e o novo" - The village, the ancient and the new - dated from 2000, about the decline of those Galician villages, their populations and ancestral ways of life, and its rediscovery by new residents who seek a new life there, healthier and closer to nature, despite the difficult conditions and extreme hardship - quite different from the romantic idea that sometimes one has - of these places as beautiful as wild and isolated, and so beautifully filmed here that one can almost feel the smells of earth, smoke and mist ...
I leave above the link to this masterpiece of about 62 minutes, strongly recommended to anyone who appreciates these worlds of villages, mountains, their homes and their people.

The river place / O lugar do rio

In the vicinity of major urban centers is still possible to find places along the waterfront where, despite the pollution, certain uncaractheristic buildings or eucalyptus woods, there are elements still in place as reservoirs, mills, small stone bridges, surrounding fields and gardens that lead for the simplicity that these places have had in days gone. Reasonably intact, the one you see in the image still allows some enjoyment, even to grill some sardines at the doorstep, though I would not like to be in the shoes of those who will wear those hanging trousers if the wind changes direction ...

A nap for two / Uma sesta para dois

Maybe it was the Autumn sun, still vibrant and inviting, it might have been the lunch... Or maybe a daily habit whenever the weather helps, because this corner near the entrance seems "formatted" for a good nap. To speak the truth, in every village I've been I do not remember having found similar scene, as all people and even animals always seem to be doing something: It's just a typical romantic view, distorted by the imagination of a city dweller...

Mind your steps / Vê por onde andas

Here's another quick, relaxed work and of course on the topic of the beloved mountain villages, inspired by a particular one where I once took a nice walk. I've written before about how fascinating is for me to find huge cows wandering these streets in the same way we can find a dog or a cat. Of course, there is a visible consequence in all streets, and to make this image more in line with my visit, I should have added a huge footprint of my 12 sized shoe in one of those "street pastries" ... In two of them, to tell the truth. My wife says that if in the whole village there was only one, a single one, very visible and prominently flagged, I would manage to step on it. She's right.

Four old men seated in a wall / Quatro velhotes sentados num muro

The autumn is warm between us and slow to manifest itself in its fullness, with all that is good and less good, such as lack of water and the finding that the year's seasons are now more mixed than a week of laundry in the drum of a washing machine. It is likely therefore that the quartet of the image can still have a few more good afternoons for enjoying the view and the company in this same place, without the risk of contracting any of the flu now available in a wide choice as announced on TV...

Village cafes always wake a nostalgia on me ... I remember mild and distant rainy afternoons entirely spent in good company in these rough and snug holes.

The "Brasileiro house" / A "casa do Brasileiro"

"Brasileiros de torna-viagem", or “returned Brazilians” was, in the 19th and early 20th twentieth centuries, the name given to the Portuguese immigrants in Brazil when returning to their homeland, in many cases after having achieved great prosperity: This was often manifested in the construction of these mansions that still can be found in many urban and rural areas all over the country but especially on the North. Located in a quiet road curve of an imaginary Minho, the one we see can be regarded as austere and sober, since many of its counterparts wore a such decorative exuberance that enforced them, especially when covered by ceramic tiles, the nickname of "chamber-pot houses" ...

The last bunch / O último cacho

It won't be much more, maybe a few weeks, for the vineyards to be completely stripped of leaves, an annual event that is announced by its progressive brown, and is part of an extraordinary series of annual events that accompany the return of cold weather. Being aware of the changing seasons, week by week, watching the passage of heat to the cold and then the opposite, to observe the changes in the landscape, anticipate the following "episode", is the most pleasant of tasks: One must take this simple pleasure, because these days the four card suits created by Nature are beginning to be barely shuffled and dealt.

The descending path / O caminho que desce

I must confess that wouldn't mind to be in place of that cat, and enjoy such beautiful views over a green valley in conjunction with the full enjoyment of some tiles heated by the sun... Not bad for a day of Autumn still warm and sunny, in anticipation of days incredibly colder that will be at the door in a few weeks. In the other hand, better not be in the place of the cat since I've put my weight a lot this year, and that roof doesn't look so solid to me...

A simple corner on any neighborhood in the outskirts of any city or town, where a rural atmosphere still can be seen. Apparently the usual meeting place for an afternoon of conversation among a group of neighbors, one of them coming as usual in its inseparable bike, road companion for many years and that still has the registration plate required until, if I remember correctly, the 80's of the last century, and that is usually yellow, except when the artist forgets to color it...
