A charming cottage near a railway / Uma bela casa junto à linha

Half timbered houses have a charm of their own, and are my favorites among all the traditional Portuguese architecture. A simple whitewash makes a splendid combination with a bright color in the timber frame, doors and windows, and the house itself also combines greatly with a curvy section of one of the many narrow-gauge railways, now mostly gone, that used to cross the Northern countryside.
As casas em tabique têm um encanto muito próprio, e são as minhas favoritas de entre toda a arquitectura tradicional Portuguesa. Uma simples caiação combina esplendidamente com uma cor viva na estrutura de madeira, portas e janelas, e a casa no seu todo também combina com um curvilíneo troço de uma das muitas linhas férreas de via estreita, actualmente quase desaparecidas, que atravessavam o interior Nortenho.

In the northern Portugal, few are the villages and farms where it isn't possible to find one of these typical granaries, the "espigueiros" or "canastros", as they are known, built in materials and sizes that differ from region to region. More difficult to find, although existing, is one that may stay in this way over a path...

The town centre / O centro da vila

This scene could take place in any of the several small towns in my country, especially in the North and Centre. In front of the church there may be a small square with a garden and bandstand, and it's almost sure that the Town Hall will be in its opposite side. With this or any other arrangement, this is a somewhat utopian image anyway, because there isn't a single car in sight, as well as any TV antenna or the inevitable twelve-storey skyscraper, the proud of a local contractor...
Esta cena poderia ter lugar em qualquer uma das muitas pequenas vilas do nosso País, sobretudo no Norte e Centro... Defronte da igreja haverá decerto uma pequena praça com jardim e coreto, e quase de certeza a Câmara Municipal estará do lado oposto. Com esta ou outra disposição, esta é de qualquer forma uma imagem algo utópica, pois não há um único automóvel à vista, nem tão-pouco antenas de televisão ou o inevitável arranha-céus de doze andares, o orgulho de um empreiteiro local...

É época da poda das vinhas, e a pouco e pouco elas vão aparecendo preparadas para mais um ano de belas folhagens, sombra fresca e sumarentos bagos. Embora num cenário diferente, um velho amigo inspirou este trabalho: Ele nunca falha esta tarefa, que executa com precisão e rapidez surpreendentes, não obstante os seus mais de 80 anos de idade...

Roadside village / Aldeia à beira da estrada

...And we're back to the beautiful Minho landscapes... An imaginary Minho, I must say, made of memories and impressions. But I'm sure that I must have passed by some peaceful place like this, since there is no lack of roads in which these villages appear by their side, their slow paced life unnoticed by those who pass there in a rush.
...E cá voltamos às belas paisagens do Minho... Um Minho imaginário é certo, feito de memórias e impressões. Mas estou certo que já terei passado por algum pacífico lugar parecido com este, pois não faltam por lá estradas onde se nos deparam estas aldeias onde a vida corre devagar sem que nisso repare quem por lá passa depressa.

The shale-built houses / As casas de xisto

Some of the most rustic traditional houses in our villages are built with shale, and sometimes may still have slate roofs. There is no lack of places in the Northern and Central Portuguese countryside in which this scene could take place...
Algumas das mais rústicas casas tradicionais das nossas aldeias são feitas de xisto, podendo em certos casos ainda ter telhados de ardósia. Não faltam locais no interior Norte e Centro do País onde esta cena poderia ter lugar...

Everybody knows each other in the countryside villages, and the smallest of happenings always gives a good excuse for a few instants of chat between neighbours. Which subject may have claimed the attention of this trio and even some of their animals, in a village somewhere in Douro?
Toda a gente se conhece nas aldeias do interior e o mais pequeno acontecimento é sempre um bom pretexto para alguns instantes de conversa entre vizinhos. Que assunto terá chamado a atenção deste trio e até mesmo de alguns dos animais, numa qualquer aldeia do Douro?

Morning in Minho / Manhã no Minho

In the top north-western Portugal, Minho has a reputation of being the greenest and most cheerful of all its provinces. Although in actual days many of its landscapes have been spoiled by excessive and unplanned building, especially around major towns and cities, some places exist that still make justice to that reputation, their contemplation being a total joy by early morning.
No extremo noroeste de Portugal, o MInho tem fama de ser a mais verde e alegre das suas províncias. Apesar de hoje em dia muitas das suas paisagens estarem estragadas pelo excesso e desordem de construções, sobretudo à volta das localidades mais importantes, existem recantos que ainda fazem justiça a essa velha reputação, e que é um deleite contemplar de manhã cedo.
