Many of my sketches end with a bridge over a river... I was going to say 50%, but decided to be more accurate and counted them since January. Tricky memory: Nine after all, including this one :))
Muitos dos meus esboços acabam com uma ponte sobre um rio... Ia dizer 50%, mas decidi ser mais preciso e fui contá-los desde Janeiro. Memória traiçoeira: Nove ao todo, incluindo este :))

Yellow house / Casa amarela

The afternoon sunlight falling over the house that gives the title to this work, the simplest of all images. Just one scene of “the suburbs of any town", a term often used here, as those same places are a major source of inspiration for these small works. And that's it, no so much left to say... Let's enjoy the warmth.
O sol da tarde incidindo sobre a casa que dá o título a este trabalho, numa imagem do mais simples que pode haver. Apenas mais uma cena “dos arrabaldes de uma qualquer vila”, essa expressão já tantas vezes aqui usada, ou não fossem esses mesmos lugares uma das principais fontes de inspiração para estes pequenos trabalhos. E pronto, não há muito mais para dizer... Aproveite-se o calorzinho.

The descending dog / O cachorro descendente

It may be easy for a person to be carried away by an enthusiastic dog in a "back-cracker" as this sloping street appears to be, and this four-legged friend is not even one of the biggest. Well, there may be some compensation at the returning time, if the enthusiasm has not waned. All this happens in a reasonably sunny day that enables those who are not meddlesome in similar troubles, to enjoy the views from a hillside full of scattered houses, so typical of the Minho. On a rainy day, with the wet stones surrounded by ranges of slippery grass, I do not know how all this would have ended...
Não deve ser fácil para uma pessoa deixar-se levar por um cão entusiasmado num “quebra-costas” como esta calçada aparenta ser, e este amigo de quatro patas até nem é dos maiorzinhos. Enfim, talvez haja compensação por alturas do regresso, no caso de o entusiasmo não ter esmorecido. Tudo isto se vai passando num dia razoavelmente ensolarado que permite, a quem não esteja metido em semelhantes trabalhos, gozar as vistas para uma encosta de casas dispersas, tão típica das paragens Minhotas. Num dia de chuva, com as pedras molhadas e envolvidas por escorregadios intervalos de relva, não sei como tudo isto terminaria...

Summer arrived. Time for a couple of beers with a few buddies in the local tavern... Alchohol-free for me, please.
Chegou o Verão. Tempo para umas cervejolas com uns quantos amigalhaços no tasco da aldeia... P'ra mim sem álcool, s.f.f.

Since I started painting these small works that have tended to "jump" between imaginary places of my two favorite Portuguese regions: the Minho, in its mountainous side, and the Douro, in its “magical-vineyardish” one, with occasional incursions by other latitudes, because there are some that I also greatly appreciate... Everything depends on which side the "compass" points, as well as the number of references that my rusty memory provides me at the time when a new work is about to be born - or try to - still as a sketch, which is always the starting point for everything else.
What does all this have to do with the title of this work? Nothing. Since it was sufficiently descriptive and does not leave me much to say about the scene, I opted for this little digression taking its "geographic" side as excuse, in this case the second of my top regions mentioned above.
Desde que comecei a pintar estes pequenos trabalhos que a tendência tem sido andar a “saltar” entre recantos imaginários das minhas duas regiões preferidas do País: o Minho, na sua vertente serrana ou mais propriamente “Penedo-Geresiana”, e o Douro, na sua vertente mágico-vinhateira, com ocasionais incursões por uma ou outra latitude, porque outras há que também muito aprecio... No fundo, tudo depende do lado para o qual aponta a “bússola”, e da quantidade de referências que a minha enferrujada memória me disponibiliza na altura em que um novo trabalho está em vias de nascer – ou tentar nascer – ainda sob a forma de esboço, que é sempre o ponto de partida para tudo o resto.
Que tem tudo isto a ver com o título deste trabalho? Nada. Sendo ele suficientemente descritivo, e não me sobrando muito que dizer acerca da cena, optei por esta pequena divagação aproveitando o lado “geográfico” da mesma, aqui remetendo para a segunda das minhas mencionadas regiões de topo.

Land of all colors / Terra de todas as cores

And here we are in an imaginary place located just at the doors of the beautiful mountains of Gerês, where the Minho-of-all-colors-plus-all-green-you-may-want-to-add becomes a mountain of granite cliffs... Beautiful and colorful, that's how I found the hills that inspired this work that only faintly honors them, on a sunny morning when I went there to get back in touch. And since today is no less brighter than this short journey of good memory, I shall complete the exercise of imagination by seeing me taking the same village access road by which the intrepid biker amounts, and take a shortcut that descends from one of its narrow winding streets to a place where a river makes a pool of clear water... If ther's no "post" tomorrow, it is because I've set up a tent and let myself stay there.
E cá estamos nós num local imaginário situado mesmo às portas das belas serranias do Gerês, ali onde o Minho-de-todas-as-cores-mais-todo-o verde-que-se-queira-acrescentar se faz montanha de incontáveis e graníticos penedos... Belas e coloridas, foi assim que encontrei as encostas que inspiraram este trabalho que só tenuemente as homenageia, numa manhã soalheira em que por lá andei a matar as saudades. E como o dia de hoje não está menos risonho do que o dessa curta jornada de boa memória, completarei o exercício de imaginação vendo-me a tomar esse mesmo caminho de acesso a uma aldeia por onde ascende o intrépido “motocardo”, e tomar um atalho que desce desde uma das suas ruas tortuosas até um local onde um rio faz uma piscina de água límpida... Se amanhã não houver “post”, é porque armei tenda e me deixei ficar por lá.

Pink stories / Histórias cor-de-rosa

Pink indeed, but more because of the house color, one of these beautiful houses on the outskirts of any town, than because of the lively conversation content between the three neighbors, while the impatient child just wants to go home to see the cartoons on TV... Unless it may really be the color of the debated subject, if it concerns a sentimental life in the vicinity. If an envy gossip is on the loose, it will be then more green, or a purple in the case of a wrathful and moralist indignation, or a frosty blue if there is a creepy health problem, the king of subjects exaggerated to measure. But for myself, the one who has a reason to be of all colors is the character at the right when, in the tranquility of her favorite corner in the garden, she suddenly realises that is about her they are talking about...
Cor-de-rosa sim, mas mais por causa da cor da casa, uma dessas belas casas dos arredores de qualquer vila, do que por causa do teor da animada conversa entre as três vizinhas, ante a impaciência do crianço que só quer ir para casa ver os bonecos na televisão... A menos que seja mesmo essa a cor do assunto que tão vivamente se debate, caso esteja em questão uma vida sentimental das redondezas. Se a inveja maledicente estiver à solta, será então mais o verde; Um colérico púrpura havendo indignação moralista, um enregelador azul perante um arrepiante problema de saúde exagerado à medida, ou não fosse este o rei dos assuntos. Mas cá para mim, quem tem razão para ficar de todas as cores é a personagem à direita quando, na tranquilidade do seu recanto preferido no jardim, se apercebe de repente que é dela que estão a falar...

A quiet corner / Um recanto sossegado

Must be the age. More and more I appreciate all these elements that, together, contribute to form what may be called a "quiet corner". Where may be possible for a person to sit on a stone bench like the one near which the mother cat warns the little ones to the street dangers, and enjoy whatever is to be enjoyed at the moment: The distant voices between two notes of the singing river, the freshness of the vine, the colorful floral notes, the facades that do not harm... Anyway, just by imagining and putting on paper this whole scene, already I feel my heart beating more slowly.
Deve ser da idade. Cada vez mais aprecio todos esses elementos que, em conjunto, contribuem para formar aquilo a que se pode designar um “recanto sossegado”. Onde seja possível uma pessoa sentar-se num banco de pedra como aquele perto do qual a mãe gata adverte os pequenotes para os perigos da rua, e desfrutar do que houver a desfrutar no momento: As vozes distantes entre duas notas do cantar do rio, a frescura da vinha, os coloridos apontamentos florais, as fachadas que não agridem... Enfim, só de imaginar e passar para o papel toda esta cena já sinto o coração a bater mais devagar.

An old woman shelling broad beans / Uma velhota a descascar favas

I previously praised the broad bean here, that beautiful legume I count among my favorites at the table, to the point of having devoted a piece of my yesterday morning to do exactly the same of this nice old lady, with the difference that behind me I had not one of these crooked and magnificent examples of traditional house, a genre that also has been here the focus of my flattering attention...
So what else can we speak about? Perhaps the existential doubt that was taking me as long as the brush was progressing in its advance by the rectangular arena: Is this same old woman who wears the pink trousers we see hanging?
Já em tempos aqui fiz o elogio da fava, essa bela leguminosa que conto entre as minhas preferidas à mesa, a ponto de ter dedicado um pedaço da manhã de ontem a fazer exactamente o mesmo que faz esta simpática velhota, com a diferença de que atrás de mim não tinha um destes desconchavados e magníficos exemplares de casa tradicional, de um género que também por aqui já foi alvo da minha elogiosa atenção...
Resta-nos pois falar de quê? Talvez da dúvida existencial que foi tomando conta de mim à medida que o pincel ia progredindo no seu avanço pela rectangular arena: Será que é ela, esta mesma velhota, quem veste as calças cor-de-rosa que vemos dependuradas?
