A pink house / Casa cor-de-rosa

A rustic house painted in pink... Actually a good excuse to take advantage of all the textures and subtleties of its faded walls, but especially the walls of granite in the nearby yard: The rough and rustic beauty of the stone in fields and villages is something that fascinates me!

A mill in the heart of a village / Moinho no coração de uma aldeia

Few things are more charming than the older rustic water mills, from which hundreds still exist, although mostly abandoned, but finding one of them at the heart of a remote mountain village during a stroll by its irregular streets, it's like the sublime junction of two pleasures.

Talking about Spring / A falar da Primavera

Spring is there! Colorful flowers start to appear everywhere, as well as tender leaves in many trees. Maybe all that glory is the subject of conversation between those two locals, in a still peaceful location surrounded by green fields, although not far from a major city...

The Wash house street... step by step / A Rua do Lavadouro... passo a passo

Although nowadays the washing machines are already a presence in most homes, these are still public wash houses to in many places, and not necessarily in the most rural or remote: I know some well within large cities such as Porto, and many more in its surroundings...

Since I described here recently my working methods from the first sketches to the moment when the drawing is ready to receive the first colors, I thought it would be interesting to give a sequence to that description, showing how the painting is done until the final result. However, I have some difficulty in describing what happens by writing, because everything is done in a somewhat intuitive manner, so I chose to put out the images of the work progression in the way it looked at the end of each session, which are perhaps more enlightening than anything I could write.

Like so many other houses of the early 20th century, this extravagant one was named as "Villa ...", followed by a feminine name, probably from the owner's wife, which is proudly boasted on a tile panel in the front. The fallen tiles, the rust and especially the old half-dismantled windmill indicates that the "Villa Marília", although having apparentely escaped to the fate of so many of these houses, tore down to make room for soulless concrete boxes, has witnessed days of higher splendor.

Sketches at Friday / Esboços à Sexta

I thought it would be interesting to dedicate one day a week to posting some sketches, and so I chose Friday for that purpose, nothing bothered that today it is the thirteen.
I present three that were recentely made, still not knowing when or if they will be turned into paintings...
The first of them was made at today's lunch break.
The second one was made yesterday, in the same period.
The third is the sketch that led to the previous work: You may notice that the final painting is reversed in relation to what we see here. One of the advantages of using the transparent paper on transposing to the definitive one - see the recent post about my working method - is to realise that sometimes the reversed drawing becomes more interesting than the original draft.

Little red suburban house / Casinha vermelha dos subúrbios

Charming little houses of the suburbs, with their small and pleasant gardens and backyards ... How quiet should be life on them in the days these were still largely rural outskirts. Today, we still can see many like this, although it is almost certain that everything around them has changed, much has been built and the traffic and noise replaced the warmth.

Ribeiravelha

Cascading from the top of a hill to the river crossed by an old bridge, the village of Ribeiravelha – something like Oldcreek – is one of those charming villages south of the Douro River that worth a visit not only for the sights, but also throughout its interesting traditional architectural heritage, which remains miraculously preserved.

Sketches of things to come / Esboços do que está para vir

Not necessarily by this order, and may even appear some other I did and liked meanwhile...
But one of these is already on the way. Which one? I will not say ...

Too much wine / Vinho a mais

It is quite common the image of the drunken man singing or speaking alone while staggering the way home, after a few glasses of wine in the tavern he visits daily ... Sometimes the most picturesque of these characters are the subject of some mockery, especially in smaller places where everyone is familiar, but behind their behavior there is always a story, not always a happy one.
