Igreja da Penha / The Penha church
Goes back to 1710 the tradition of the Lenten Perpetual Prayer, a religious event during which the main churches of Braga, in a scheduled sucession, keep open from morning to evening within two days, for the solemn exhibition of the Blessed Sacrament. Some of these churches, being property of private institutions, are usually closed to public the rest of the year, making this an exceptional chance to visit them.
So was the case of this small temple, so discreet – its entrance can be seen in the foreground on this post – that almost gets unnoticed from outside. But another splendor is revealed inside, with emphasis on the theatrical pulpit assigned to the sculptor and carver Marceliano de Araújo, and the beautiful wall tiles from the master Policarpo de Oliveira Bernardes.
