Evening in a village / Entardecer numa aldeia

Two generations coexist, each on in his way, a scene of tranquility in some village, during the magical hour when the light begins to decline. One of the most beautiful moments of the day, especially this time of year when daylight stretches until later.
By placing the older characters highlighted in relation to the children enjoying their football game, I involuntarily inculcated some symbolism in this scene, not unrelated with that word, "decline", because more and more the villages have more older people and fewer children ...

The railway that almost existed / A linha que quase existiu

This work is imaginary as usual, but was based on real facts about something that... did not exist. Confusing?
Let us clear: I intended to give a vague idea of how a railway whose construction has begun but never completed in last century 30's would look: Part of a much broader railway plan, the Vale do Lima line would connect Viana do Castelo with Ponte de Lima; It would be an electrified line, ahead of its time, a sort of "light rail" of that era...
Although apparently a single rail was never laid in the built infrastructure, the rolling stock for this line actually existed, built by the German firm Wumag Maschinenbau, and was delivered although never used, being ultimately sold to Spain where it circulated until the end of the 80's in the Valencia suburban network, being locally known as "Los Portugueses”.
For this painting, and unlike the usual, I had to look for some photo resources for the train itself to seem minimally plausible. Apart from this, all the remaining scene is imagined with all the risks involved, so I hope that the end result may never be taken too seriously ...
The observant traveler who travels the road between Ponte de Lima and Viana, by the north bank of the river - a journey otherwise recommended by its beauty – may still find parts of the trackbed and some other works, the last remainings of the "railway that almost existed". But even if it really existed, and due to the disastrous transport policies pursued by successive governments over the past decades, I've been wondering if it would be just that we would find anyway...

Uma actualização / An update
I recently received an email from Leonardo B., a member of the Fundació Ferrocaib of Majorca, where two of these vehicles are presently being restored, one of which will be presented with the original factory livery, just like when delivered at that time in Viana do Castelo.
He kindly elucidated me about some aspects on my painting that are not in accordance with the original aspect of these vehicles, as I shall describe:
- The front was symmetrical, with a wider central window, and had no door intercom as shown in the watercolor: This one was added later in Valencia. For this reason, there was a single central headlight, under the central wider window, instead of the two each side.
- Originally there were two pantographs on the roof to capture the electricity and not those devices known as bow collectors. These were also a Valencian addition. I was led to think the opposite due to a prejudice of mine, as I thought that the latter had a more "ancient" look...
I have to thank Leonardo for the information and corrections, and to send my enthusiastic congratulations to Fundació Ferrocaib for the priceless and excellent work in recovering these and other vehicles of the Iberian railway heritage.

A storyless afternoon / Uma tarde sem história

I have to confess my difficulty in writing something about this work ... Just the brush was starting its task on the paper rectangle, and I was already burning my brains on this important issue. It was one of those sketches that I immediately felt like watercoloring it, spent a good time doing it, liked the final result - although, as always, total satisfaction is never achieved - and then, at the time to write something... Nothing, for the simple reason that it looks descriptive enough to me: Just a normal afternoon in a beautiful village street, where there is a beautiful house with a beautiful yard. Why asking for more if is this enough?

Killing thirst / Matar a sede

The theme of the tavern or cafe, the meeting point of those who inhabit or work in its surroundings, has been recurrent around here. We can find it here, here or here, for example, but not only... So it was inevitable that it would be back, not only for being one of the most picturesque subjects within the themes I like to paint, but also because this may be one of the most desirable places in these sweltering days, for the shadow and the company offered, but especially because that's where the more effective "ammunition" for a difficult battle against thirst can be found: The fight is fierce and it is not unusual that, defeated an enemy that sooner or later will rise again, some of the most committed "fighters" leave the place staggering...

Two houses / Duas casas

I've been all week around this work... Not that it was especially complex, as I had others that were so much more, and much more quickly they were dispatched. It is me who have been slowing down these days, I can feel it: The same amount of time, will and effort is turned into less work. Everyone goes through periods like this, and is nothing to be concerned, especially since the "tyranny of numbers" would be knocking on the wrong door here if it thought it had something to say here. Let us therefore say that this slowing is due to the typical height of Summer lethargy, a drowsiness that maybe can be translated in the serenity of this nice street in a village somewhere... What is nonetheless an interesting contradiction, since this is the time of year when, by virtue of the return of the locals who work abroad, the villages are more animated.

From porch to courtyard / Do alpendre para o pátio

More than the curious shape of this country house somewhere on the edge of any village, I was interested in painting the extraordinary and chaotic array of objects and paraphernalia scattered throughout the courtyard, from old boots and basins up to boards, firewood and stakes for the beans or tomatoes, through ladders, barrel staves and everything else imaginable among meandering chickens. An "organized mess", as the owner knows where to find the tiniest of his belongings, something that interests him much more than winning the "Home and Garden" prize, although the whole set would constitute a more interesting “installation” than those of many museums ...

The best place to be / O melhor sítio para estar

Is there a better place to be at the peak of Summer? By this time, many families like the one at the image will be installed for a nice Sunday of freshness in similar places, perhaps with the only difference that they will not find the peace suggested by the image since, and especially on weekends, the demand almost exceeds the offer... The lucky fate of these characters here presented at the moment that just precedes a nice dive - or its splashing equivalent, the depth of the water apparently not alowing much more - is that the sketch that gave them life was made on a Monday.

A fresher day / Um dia mais fresco

I do not know how are things on my reader's side, but here we have had a week of stifling heat, which incidentally has already caused some grumbling in previous posts because this friend of yours lives badly with temperatures soaring beyond the comfortable... So the presence of water in one more work is not surprising, this time the one that falls from the clouds, something that hasn't been seen lately. It is, say, a kind of "rain dance" performed by the sympathetic quartet of brushes that usually helps me in these watercolor tasks, hoping to transpose to the real plan these wet days that already are missed to refresh the ideas, and especially to help fight the forest fires that, as a sort of seasonal inevitability to which we may not - or may not want to - escape, are everywhere these days.

A picturesque house / Casa pitoresca

Villages near fresh water ... I cannot conceive most refreshing sight on days like this when I'm writing, with 100,4F outdoors. The shadowed corners of these places are probably the only ones in which a city dweller not so fond of heat can find some comfort, may it be the shade of a vine or tree, in some cool cellar or, in desperation, inside the water. None of this has to do with the title of this work, since the beautiful house in the foreground was what led me to paint it, but as these sweltering days seem to melt inspiration, whether for a simple sketch or write a text, no one will mind if we stay this way.

Smiling landscape / Paisagem risonha

Here we have a "road view" in a bit of what I wrote before about it, this time with longer horizons, in one of those clean days when you see everything clearly as far as the eye can see. One of those days when the landscape, with its many colors and details in which the different greens and the colorful houses are highlighted, seems literally to smile at us. The environment is therefore of total relaxation, and even the supposed rural worker I've put in the foreground to include some human element, seems to give a relaxing Sunday stroll in the company of the dog, his hoe beig just a prop to give him a working air ...

The old bridge place / O lugar da ponte velha

Here is one of the many “bridge places” that exist across this country. As in many other ancient bridges of respect, it is likely that it is popularly known as "Roman", although it can be almost certainly of medieval origin... It is even probable that it was part of one of the many routes followed by pilgrims to Santiago de Compostela, and that the old house - surely the "Bridge House", now with a very different aspect of the original – gave shelter to many of them. All probabilities and conjectures anyway, but I had to invent something to entertain those who read all this nonsense, while we await the passing flock.

A corner in orange / Uma esquina alaranjada

With this "corner in orange", we make a little imaginary move to some geographies a bit southern of our usual, more exactly to the so-called "land between Douro and Vouga”, densely populated but very enjoyable to travel, and full of amazing places. The vivid color of the houses is characteristic of the region, and it is not difficult to stumble upon magnificent farmhouses and mansions in striking intricate designs, often complemented with beautiful tiles or, for example, art nouveau decorations... The one of the image is much more modest if compared with those descriptions, but not without its own interest, especially when accompanied by an elegant water pumping windmill, another element often found there.

In this painting, done in an eye twinkling, no major landscaping or architectural complexities. Only the desire to fix a moment and evoke some sunny Summer afternoons, languid and luminous by means of a heat that only invites to be in the shade. Looking at the freshness of the shaded tunnel under the vines that enters into the farm, just feel like diving into it as if it was a swimming pool... But why talking about swimming pools, if nearby there shall be certainly a refreshing river or stream or, at worst, a cold granite watering tank ?

Stone and vine / Pedra e vinha

Here's one of those faster and relaxed works, for which the portrayed subject could not be other than certain villages I know and have missed to visit... This sudden urge to "play with the stones," to depict those rough and heavy blocks that plenty of labor and ingenuity turned into houses, mills and bordering walls can only be, I have no doubt, the fruit of such longing. It's one of those things that comes back here on the blog from time to time, and – what a predictable painter - will happen again for sure.

Whenever I think of "thermae towns", the first image that comes to mind is these old accomodation buildings that swarmed around the bathhouses and sources from which sprang the waters so sought after their therapeutical effects... Any resort worthy of its name would have to have a couple of hotels, a few more modest pensions as the one pictured here, and the indispensable boulevards, gardens and parks with leafy trees for idle and quiet walks.
Today, the hydrotherapy seems to be reborn, wearing clothes more in line with that so-called and vague "contemporary" concept. We must welcome this revival, even though it probably will be the loss of some of the romantic "old postcard atmosphere" which, as an incorrigible nostalgic, I still associate to these places, and that in many of them is still embodied in countless buildings of architectural beauty, sometimes of enormous proportions, also waiting to be rescued to their present decline or even ruin in order to “join the party” and reappear in a new splendor.

A stretch of road in the morning / Um trecho de estrada pela manhã

It's not uncommon, in my small one-morning-excursions, to cross green and attractive road sections like this. I would even say that once left behind the ugliness of the suburbs, and having chose the route with relative discretion, a good percentage of what I go through is this type of landscape. It is not uncommon to pull over and stop, even just a few minutes, to exit the car and take a closer contact with what the eyes see, enjoying the silence and the freshess of the air. Often and because of this, when coming back home after traveling many miles, I find myself thinking that I did nothing more than to turn around like a fool with no apparent destination. Might not be so: By putting on paper the memorial result of such experiences, I conclude that the enjoyment, even for minutes, of these beautiful and discreet anonymous places may be exactly what makes me want, only a few days after, to get up early and go on the road again.

A passage over a river in what appears to be a thermae town / Passagem sobre um rio no que aparenta ser uma vila termal

A limpid river, mountains and green woods with hotel or pension-buildings lurking among them... These and other indicators seem to say that we are in some watering place, sought after for its therapeutic properties plus the fresh air, the gourmet conterweight and, last but not the least, the sweet idleness. In reality, as always without reproducing it faithfully, I have been inspired by the atmosphere of a similar place from which I keep fantastic memories from almost thirty years ago, at the time that thermae baths were still called thermae, and not this "thing "in use today, with three initials that sound like the onomatopoeia of a slap... So here's a small tribute to such place, and especially to all mates of so memorable journeys.

Today's sketch / O esboço do dia - 236

The village church, built in stone as everything else...
