Today's sketch / O esboço do dia - 36

I like this kind of simple scenes: There's nothing remarquable or spectacular on them, but they can become nice, fast, easy works, ideal for those days when there isn't a mood for more...

Nice views / Belas vistas

I wouldn't mind to be in place of the old lady that, strongly waving her arm, keeps a conversation with neighbors about something unfathomable ... In her place, however, would rather delight myself with the privileged horizons offered by the window, especially under the special light of a sunny afternoon end. Concerning the neighbors, I would hasten the conversation to resume the listening of the river waters - the best music twenty four hours a day.

In the densely populated Minho region, there is always something to see in each section of the many anonymous roads that wind between hills and valleys. From the shape of the surrounding mountains, the green of the always present vineyards, the trees, the domestic farming fields that still resist, to the old traditional and manor houses, churches, stone walls, some horizon that surprises at the end of a rise... There's no shortage of distracting factors for a landscape lover that may happen to be driving, which can also be a drawback: Fortunately the alcohol detectors don't detect anything in those who are just fluster of beauty, otherwise this friend of yours would be long inhibited to drive.

A pleasant task / Uma tarefa agradável

Judging from the picture, it seems that the Sunday lunch was pretty good for this group of creatures and, being so, better enjoy the calm of a hot afternoon to recover forces by means of a good nap... This is a "task" which appeal is hard to resist - at least given my own wide experience - and how good it may be to do it on the porch of one of these beautiful houses of the Douro wine region, in such pleasant company. A chance that must be taken, because the grape harvest season is approaching, and then there won't be a minute to practice this noble art.

The best of shadows / A melhor das sombras

There's nothing like arriving to a village and see the freshness and beauty that "latadas", the suspended vineyards, give to the streets, turned fresh by a shadow of capricious crop falling from a roof of green leaves, tresspassed by the light here and there.
They can be also seen at the entrances of houses, wall sidings, covering patios, access paths, and sometimes even a stream that occurs to cross there... And in colder months, when they are devoid of leaves and grapes, allow the sun to light and warm those same places as much as possible. An ancestral, ecological and beautiful "public work" that did not cost millions in public money on studies and engineering ...

"Barbearia Moderna"

Like many others who still stand in my country's towns and villages, "Barbearia Moderna" - Modern Barber Shop - is not as modern as that... Perhaps it was when it opened. Today is just a nice traditional barber shop with a loyal clientele in a street where days go slowly and there's time to read the latest sport news, so getting a good supply of subjects for the conversation with the next customer. I love these traditional barber shops, even knowing that no barber can complain of excessive work with the little remaining "raw material" on the top of my head ...

A cheerful landscape / Uma paisagem alegre

The summer is at its peak and we should take advantage of the joy of its colors and brightness, not allowing a single moment to escape, especially now when it is noticeable that the days are already shrinking. And if for many it is in the bustling beaches and the sea that they find the ideal environment to enjoy each ray of sunshine, I just hope they do it as best as possible, but I prefer the places still intact and colorful in the interior north of my country, especially in the Minho province, where a single corner can be a source of inspiration

Today's sketch / O esboço do dia - 26

Rural and mountain landscapes are my favorites. When I start drawing and painting too much urban and suburban scenes like this one, it means I need to go out into some of those favorite places with the mission of "implanting" a good and inspirational quantity of images in my memory.
That hasn't been possible these days, and maybe won't in the next weeks. Although I do not live far from some little paradises, and August not being the best month to visit them, I miss already the green, the rustic village houses, the wide horizons.

Almost hidden / Quase escondido

A certain atmosphere of "secret place" surrounds this old mill that, despite being in disuse, seems reasonably maintained, which is not rule. Even when left to themselves, these buildings hold an unparalleled beauty and a collection of memories that seem to hover in the silence and the air. We call this a mill, but could be a library in which each stone is a volume full of stories: Each moss a chapter, each insect that finds shelter among them an ephemeral character.

Those who follow this blog for some time, know that the old water mills are one of the themes that appear here more – see here, here or here - a trend which does not seem to go lower... Apart from the fascination and beauty of these buildings, even when extremely rudimentary, there is the close presence of water and an environment where some bucolic atmosphere prevails, referring to old days when life ran more slowly... Actually not running: walking quietly.
There are not so many themes that may have so much to offer and this is not less true in what concerns to painting, where the challenges and difficulties abound, starting with the variety of vegetation, through the abundance of texture of the old stones, logs and, especially, the most difficult of all the elements: Water.
This is why the mills, that water that moves them and its surroundings will surely continue to appear here: Things need to be "grinded" until they come out well.

Posting a single sketch today... Not that I don't have more, but I remembered that maybe could post one today, another tomorrow etc, instead of a “block” of 3 or 4, and alternating with the watercolors finished meanwhile. The "corner polisher" / O "polidor de esquinas"

In my country, "corner polisher" is a term used to humorously refer to an individual with little or no willingness to work, prefering to spend the days against a corner with a drink and cigarette... Not only I find the expression funny, as I believe that there is a secret "corner polisher" in each one of us that will be showing up from time to time, nothing to be seriously concerned. Some, however, seem to take account of their "hosts" and then, depending on the the talent of these, can lead to very serious family and personal consequences, or can be developed to an art form ...
Of the three individuals roughly depicted here, the one in the middle seems to be the most serious candidate for the title of "corner polisher", his pose looking notoriously well trained already. But is it really so, or are we committing an injustice to someone who, at the end of a day's work, just kills the thirst with friends at the usual tavern in a narrow street of some town?

Stop, listen and look / Pare, escute e olhe

Hot days, long and bright, generously flooding with their light the fields, roads, mountains... I like all the year's seasons, but during the cold months this is an image that can't avoid without some nostalgia, counting in the calendar how many days remain for the landscapes to be smiling again...
But what does this have to do with the title of this work?
Nothing. That is the inscription featured in the signs like the one we see in the center, which are still in almost all places where a road meets a railway: "Beware of trains; Stop, listen and look; Traffic along the track is forbidden".
If you keep in mind what is recommended there, it's more than sure you will enjoy the light of summer evenings for much longer.

A riverside spot / Recanto à beira-rio

No other image more refreshing and soothing occurs to me in these Summer days than the one of a quiet place near to a river, surrounded by a beautiful landscape and fresh water, its music accompanied by a chorus of birds... However it's precisely in Summer that these places are less quiet, since everybody demands them, many times showing their value in strange ways: Filling it with garbage, loud music, etc.
The place we see here seems to escape to that noisy destiny by the simple reason that to be reached, it would be necessary to enter in my head.

Now that I finally decided that the sketches would be free from their weekly "appointment" on Fridays, they will start to stop by every time they want or, to be more precise, as soon as there is a good "bunch"...
From all the sketches published here until now, how many will be really "promoted" to paintings? That's a question only time can answer...

The evening tram / O eléctrico do fim-de-tarde

I'm not from the days when trams linked some few suburbs to the centre of Porto, my native city, through long routes, since it all disappeared when I was about two years old. In the suburbs themselves, today visually chaotic and dense, the rural world was still a strong presence, today being almost residual. All this is however in my imaginarium, and a return to home after a working day forty or fifty years ago should not be very different from what you see here ...
Today, in the city centre, when I see these vehicles with its carved fine woods, ornaments, cane rattan seats, brass handles, now with a mainly touristic function, it's hard for me to believe that for many decades they were the daily and tireless transport of many workers.

More and more sketches have been coming up in the latest days... There is a tendency to have more sketches than time to turn them into paintings but I don't see a problem on that, since they are a true enjoyment themselves as well as a good drawing practice. I've been even considering dropping this thing of publishing sketches on Fridays only and post them whenever there is a good batch. Between discipline or freedom, haven't made a decision yet: A blog can be like a bush or small tree, you can shape it according to your desire or simply let it grow free. I've been feeling more “Nature” than “topiary” these days, but would like to hear your thoughts about it.

A small break in the afternoon quietness / Pequena quebra no silêncio da tarde

The sound of a scooter, true icon of our quiet villages, cuts for a moment the silence a hot afternoon... With such a description in addition to the title, I do not think there is much more to write about in this scene so many times repeated in so many streets. Let's just wait the good man moves away on his noisy companion of a thousand journeys and, as the silence returns, resume our own more or less idle tasks.

Located in a very high point, the pretty village of S. João do Penedo, of which we see here only the entrance, has privileged scenic views to the surrounding mountains and their valleys, especially from the “penedo”, a rock that gives it the name, which we see surmounted by a cross, and where every year a festival takes place in August: It was originally in the end of June, but the date was moved because it is in August that many emmigrated natives return for holidays, a change that did not cause any inconvenience or controversy because the village is imaginary...

Friday sketches / Esboços à Sexta - 19

Almost a week passed since the last time I published something in this blog, and usually by this time should have published one or two more... Doesn't mean I've been stopped, actually painted more than usual this week, as new projects and requests arise, of which I will give account in due time. However, not much time will pass until some of the fruits of an intensive week show up here...
Regarding sketches, this was an interesting week too, and there are some that I'm eager to transform into paintings. Today I'm posting one more than usual, but I don't know why I say this, since it is not written anywhere that it must be three at a time ...

Nº 8 of Rua de Cima - Upper Street - is a small and picturesque traditional house, which is noticed by the top floor in nogging with a balcony that among other things it's quite practical to dry the clothes.
The old lady who lives there opens the door intrigued: Did someone pass, rang the bell and ran away? If I, as a child, had lived on that street, that would be certainly what happened!

Friday sketches / Esboços à Sexta - 18

It's now “official”: Adding shadows to the sketches makes them far more interesting; Helps to give a brighter idea of lights and colors in the finished work; Uninteresting sketches due to lack of shadows – and how many I may have put apart – seem to acquire a new life; And last but not the least, they become more “addictive”, feel like could sketch all time...
It is truth, I just “invented the wheel” by discovering something that looks evident but that didn't occured to me... Could laugh on this, but we are always learning, and that's the fun of it all.

Three creatures / Três criaturas

What are those three creatures, if we except the two cats of terracotta, doing under the middle afternoon sun at the small square of some village, at a time when nothing seems to happen? Given that the store located in the house on the right should only open its doors in a moment, when people starts returning from their affairs, and that in addition to providing essential products for the domestic life also serves a few glasses of good local wine, it is very likely that at least two of these creatures are eagerly waiting for the daily ritual of killing their thirst...

Sometimes it's nice to paint faster and uncompromised works, just as this one that I've been making along the weekend without other worries except having a good time, something that really happened.
It was also an excuse to come back to the favorite subject of the mountains, as in "real life" it hasn't been possible to go tho them: So here they are, and also a distant village, the green meadows, the bridge and the figure entertained with his work... Well, nothing that has not already been shown here more than once. What a boring painter! :))

The tavern behind the station / O tasco atrás da estação

The presence of a tavern just behind a railway station, almost over a plattform, may be surprising, but the truth is that I remember a place where it really happens... Ok, if memory doesn't cheat on me, there is a bit more “separation” between both worlds in the real place, even a wall, but this gives you an idea, after “filtered” by memory and imagination.
Truly real was the special atmosphere of certain stations of the Douro line, from where departed some narrow-gauge branches into the Trás-Os-Montes inland: Heat is a serious thing here at Summer, and only in places like these you could escape it, enjoying a few golden “refreshments” under a vine or, for those coming from colder countries, enjoying the sun while waiting for one of the four daily services... Everything is past now, thanks to the sad and criminal closure of these branches, in one case to build a massive dam that will also flood one of our most extraordinary natural landscapes...
