Shale, "tabique" and chickens / Xisto, tabique, galinhas

The image of a village street and its traditional buildings with their shale-built ground floor, designed to store tools and to shed animals, and the 1st floor for housing, made in “tabique”, or timber-frame and clay-plastered wood panneling - a construction technique virtually extinct among us, despite its qualities and beautiful aesthetic effect - perhaps refer immediately to certain villages of Trás-Os-Montes... However, this association may be viewed as somewhat simplistic, not only because it will not be exclusive to that region, but mainly because it is only a fraction of the wide architectural range of traditional Trás-Os-Montes buildings: I consider indeed this to be the most extraordinary among all the Portuguese provinces, for the diversity that can be found throughout its territory on its geography, architecture, climate, landscape and even language, entire countries existing with an area one hundred times more extensive but having one hundred times less variety ...

A distant train / Um comboio distante

Spring has arrived, landscapes are filled with patches of color, the sun makes them cheerful and green, especially in those days whose clarity allows the blueish and desirable mountain horizons to be reached by the eye... A steam train winding through such landscapes may refer to the past, but if you consider that some countries take advantage of this heritage rolling stock to touristically enhance some region, often in combination with a regular and modern passenger service, the image no longer will seem so anachronistic. In the other hand, "some" other countries with high potential, having the material, lines and an original and unique landscape, decide instead to dismantle everything...

Mr. Pereira greets Miss Rosa / O Sr. Pereira cumprimenta a menina Rosa

Although previous, this work almost seems to come in the sequence of another one that was published here last week, but this time in a urban or maybe suburban version, as this is the sort of nice little houses that I still find around where I live. Moreover, the same type of meeting and appropriate conversation, accompanied by the typical and delicious courtesy among old people. I've already myself, after finishing this work, how a similar meeting will be held when my generation gets there ...

Little valley of many houses / Pequeno vale de muitas casas

A small valley crossed by a stream. A place of houses more or less scattered, some more noble and others more humble, and some roads that meet, something in which they're imitated by the nearby people. I have gone through so many similar places, and only if it cannot I won't stop to admire the extraordinary landscape variety that they offer, from a simple flower pot to the largest farms with their fields, trees, vineyards, walls and tanks, and whatever else a gluttonous eye can devour.

The secular Maninho tavern, where you can drink good wine / A secular adega Maninho, onde se bebe bom vinho

All works are born under some pretext... In this case, in addition to the increasingly rare atmosphere of a neighborhood tavern, with its "saloon" shaped doors, the dark interior where you can guess the barrels from which the jolly nectar flows into a bowl, and of course, the characters that make this institution the most desired living room, only a bit more far away, from their own homes, the excuse was the old facade where the weight of the years fades the pigmented lime paint, resulting in an effect that is itself a map of the long history of a so very old house and establishment.
This is another work from my exhibition, which still can be visited from tomorrow until next Wednesday, from 2.30 to 7.00PM.

Talking about the weather / A falar do tempo

On a warm and pleasant day, two neighbors talk in a scene of absolute quietness, in the midst of which there are already notorious signs that Spring is preparing to cover everything with its colors. The subject of conversation will more than likely be the weather, thet king of subjects always at the top of preferences among all vicinal trivialities, and that has been uncertain enough to supply an endless matter to distribute to all neighbors that the man with the hat may find along his way.

Green horizons / Horizontes verdes

Imaginary as usual, this work was based on a small trip I made in the Easter Sunday morning across the region of Fafe and Vieira do Minho, and on the principal I retained from there: Beautiful mountains in the background - especially my beloved Gerês - villages surrounded by very green meadows, the granite of houses, churches, walls and other auxiliary buildings, the same one that could be seen everywhere in the shape of colossal rocks, not to mention the tiny watermills, often abandoned, taking advantage of any stream, however small it was, from the water that abounded there.
