Two trains that cross / Dois comboios que se cruzam

Two trains are about to cross at a station in an imaginary location that could well be located between Vila Meã and Marco de Canaveses... That is, somewhere across the Douro railway, but not the more "photogenic" Douro railway, the one in which tracks and river come together from one point to form one of the world's most beautiful rail journeys. Here, it is still the section that precedes the wonder, the first hour of the trip, where the magical river is still far away and the grapes that hang from trellises still gives the “vinho verde”, a section itself also very attractive, just having against it the role stolen by the most emblematic part of the journey, but also some suburbanization that has taken over its landscape in recent decades. This one dilutes, however, on the green as we move away from the coast, and yet does not prevent the careful observer to discover treasures such as beautiful fields, orchards and vineyards, interesting traditional houses, rivers, streams and mills, and much more in a continuous parade of countless details...
Like the appetizer precedes the main dish in one of those memorable meals, I recommend to the future Douro rail traveller - if such line is not to be closed meanwhile, because now things are as they are here - to savor slowly and carefully this still green journey starter.

You're the boss / A patroa é que sabe

For the title of this work, is good to see who's the boss around there... The old lady strictly manages the fates of the old farmhouse, and doesn't look like she's used to be contradicted: "When I die you may do as you want, but until there it is as I say, and who does not like it can go to the farm next door," she says with a bossy air, and so if she says the ladder is to go there, it is for there that it goes...
What seems obvious is that this whole story was nothing more than an excuse to portray the house that serves as the backdrop, one of those farmhouses composed of several bodies and materials added over the decades, and which results in a feast for the eyes and a jewel for the landscape.

A moment of light / Momento de luz

For this very simple work, I wasn't worried about the "physical" or rather, architectural and geographical aspects of the depicted landscape, although we do not lack places where this one could be located ... Here, the idea was to capture a moment in a bright sunny afternoon, a time of day that is particularly beautiful at the time of year that we are now experiencing. Not that every moment of the day doesn't have its charm in any season, something for which a cloudless sky isn't even essential, but this particular time, when the light starts to acquire the golden tone that signals the first steps of the king of stars towards the antipodes, has a special magic for me.

The meeting on Saturdays / O encontro dos Sábados

The idea for this work came after a short trip on a Winter Saturday morning, when crossing a village on the “border” between the Minho and Trás-Os-Montes, symbolized here by the marriage of the sober granite and the already visible appearance of “tabique”, the fine lightweight paneling, a marriage that I could really see there.
Despite having gone through that village without stopping, there were details that could not help but remember: The brightness of these special Saturdays in winter, the mentioned architectural details that invited for a longer stop, but above all the existing animation in the streets, where groups of neighbors stopped their tasks to chat, something that seemed to be part of their weekly routine.

A rural house / Uma casa rural

Nothing fascinates me more than these simple and crude houses, which can be found in many villages, but now with fewer people living on them. The way they blend with the landscape that surrounds them, makes them seem almost to be born spontaneously as any pine between rocks, although in reality they are are the result of a mixture of what the earth provides - wood, shale, granite, lime among others - and what people adds to it - ancient wisdom, intuition, ingenuity, practicality, aesthetics, and respect for resources.
Of course these days require different standards of comfort for those times when they were erected. Meeting them without destroying this legacy, and retaining much of the qualities mentioned above, seems to me a challenge a lot easier than it was for our ancestors to raise the walls...

Now here's one of those interesting buildings of urban feature, although they may also be found in some smaller towns and, because they have been built between the late 19th and early decades of the 20th century, are always in the middle of a kind of "sandwich"of uncertainty that for so many have been fatal, because they are not old enough to be considered "historical", nor sufficiently modern that one may assign any “pedigree” associated with who designed it... But since we're talking about sandwiches, the better we get into the "Buraco da Fonte", the “Eye of the Fountain”, old establishment that existed already in the house prior to the building, and give one a push, maybe of cod or liver, with the help of the nectar that comes out of the barrel.

The mountains behind / A serra por detrás

This work consists of two or three very simple things, starting with the house whose owner comes at the door with a bowl in hand with some uncertain purpose, and continuing in the narrow alley, certainly part of the artery network of some village, and that ends in a mountain road. And it's by that same alley, invaded by a cool shadow, that lurks a blue mountainous profile, one of those that acquire a particular beauty in these days when the first Summer temperatures start rehearsing... How many palaces and luxurious villas, thirty times more elaborate than this house so simple can have such a great and privileged company?
