Friday sketches / Esboços à Sexta - 17

I've been adding shadows in my latest sketches, which can be noticed here in the second and third ones – the first being older – and what seems to be an insignificant detail has actually an extraordinay impact in the way of studying and antecipating the final result, as it allows a better visualisation of the light, atmosphere and colors to use that may have an influence in my future works. And it also increases my desire to advance for the painting...
I still have many older sketches, and it's very likely that some will have shadows added if I decide myself about them.
All of this has to do with my working methods, about which I wrote here and here.

This is the most flowery time of the year, something particularly noticeable in these small farms where flowers mingle happily with vegetables, orchards, vines, stacks and everything else in an apparent and lovely chaos that is a true private world. In this time when the days are long and bright, backs must be bent to pick the potatoes from the land, a tiring task especially if the sun presses, but that will be compensated with something that is not found in "industrial" potatoes: Flavor.

Big house in small town / Casa grande em vila pequena

These old houses with their upper floors built on nogging and coated with metal sheet or other materials, were common in almost all cities and towns in the north of the country, but are becoming more rare now. Many of them were tore down in last century's decades of 70 and 80 to give room to multi-storey buildings, most of them of an unbelievable ugliness: While houses like this, even when in the path of ruin, retain a dignity that make many people say it's a pity to see them in that condition, no one says the same about those buildings when, after a half-dozen years only, they appear darkened by moisture, with all kind of cracks and a collection of molds to give envy to a laboratory.

The first sketch is from the previous painting.
The second one shows how I've been adding a few shadows for better ligh and shadow orientation.
The third sketch is a step into a path I wanted to follow more often, some paintings of people working in their fields. The “organised chaos” of vegetables, flowers and fruit trees, mixed with vines, stacks and all sorts of improvised structures is something that may never appear in the pages of a “house and garden” magazine, but I find a true fascination on it, the one of the genuine and simple things, a sort of true human scale. Maybe because in the future I wouldn't mind to be in that good old man's shoes, the same ones he removed for a better contact with the land.

A simple granary / Um simples espigueiro

A simple wooden granary, just like some that can be seen in certain fantastic villages along the Paiva river, was the excuse to paint this corner where no living soul can be seen... Or maybe it isn't just like that, because I'm one of those who believe that animals have a soul. To say the truth, I find more soul in one of the chickens like those we see quietly pecking around, than in some “samples” of the human kind. However, all of this provided me a good time practicing the “village textures” I like so much.

An old street / Uma rua antiga

Last Friday and Saturday, after two failed attempts with a new work - the last one in the sketch sequence previously posted - I decided to put it away, have a good sleeping night and start freshly with something different on Sunday. Searched then among some of my older sketches, and found one that pleased me. Wasn't expecting to have it finished in the same day, but it just happened, being a good compensation for the wasted time and work of the previous days.
So here we have a pleasant street in the historical centre of an old town, ending in a small square with two old ladies chatting at the entrance of an old convent. It seems to me that if someone in the above porch happened to excessively approach one of those flower pots, it would be the end of some juicy local gossip...

The souvenir shop / A casa das lembranças

There's no place of tourism or pilgrimage who has not a dozen-and-half of souvenir shops just as the one we see, in this case near to a shrine. In these true caves of Ali-Baba, all kinds of memorabilia associated to the place can be found, many of which of a delicious "kitsch", but also toys, postcards, t-shirt's and hats, locally made honey and herbal teas for all illnesses, candles, ice-cream and liquors, some typical crockery including the inevitable real-scale dog, not to mention some handicraft of dubious provenance and manufacturing: I'll never forget the day I entered one of these shops in a hot-springs town well within mountainous countryside and saw, proudly bearing the place's name - written with a permanent marker - some miniatures of fishing boats...

To get around in the streets of a hillside village is to be sure of finding countless details and surprises, which worth well the effort of climbing its steep streets and paths, an effort that is part of their inhabitant's routine. The architecture of these places, adapted to such an irregular relief, is by itself of the greatest interest: A house that looks tiny from the street level, can actually be just the top of a much taller building...

Cafes and hardware stores / Cafés e drogarias

This colorful tiny town somewhere in the Douro valley, presents on its roadside two of the most typical establishments that can be found in all small towns in the countryside: At the right the inevitable cafe, sometimes together with a grocery store, that is one of the most lively meeting points for everyone, and at the left one of those delightful hardware stores selling everything you need for the affairs of farming or building, from a simple bottle cork to a small tractor...

Friday sketches / Esboços à Sexta - 14

Three sketches done in different days, and as a curious final result, the presence of a “pattern”, or unconscious variations on the same theme: The house and its geographical position. Lack of imagination? According to some of my recent spirits, I would say yes. However, I like the final result of these sketches and some of them will become paintings.

Almost arriving / Quase a chegar

The image of a level-crossing, with its guard holding a red flag and opening and closing the gates manually it's almost a thing from the past. Not only many of these crossings have been replaced by under or overpasses for safety reasons, but also the remaining ones are now automatic.
Also these little charming cottages coated with tiles are almost-extincted, but I still have the idea that there's always one in the vicinity of these points where roads meet railways, which does not necessarily correspond to the truth... Only my imagination at work. Looking at this one, I can only imagine the cupboard in the dining room, with its load of glasses and dishes, swinging noisily every time a train passes by...
É apenas o imaginário a funcionar.

Old woman at the entrance of her house / Uma velhota à porta de casa

It is sure that you will see one of these characters if you go to any of these villages I'm always painting... You'll see them getting around with the cattle, carrying loads of wood, straw or something else, or simply doing something at the door's entrance, from where they will salute, welcome and chat with you with the genuine friendliness of who doesn't see too many strangers. Most of the time their generation is the sole remnant of a once lively community, more recently drained from their youngsters, departed in search of a better life in the coastal cities or abroad, coming back for holiday only in Summer, ocasionally on Christmas or Easter.
Everytime I see these old people, true living libraries even when they can't write or read, I can't keep myself from thinking that I'm witnessing the last days of an ancestral way of life, many centuries old, because in less than two decades they will disappear themselves with all their wisdom. What will happen then to the villages?

A study on the Douro / Estudo sobre o Douro

I wanted to paint something faster, looser and uncomplicated than my usual paintings, and the result was this little study from memory of the gorgeous and scenic Douro valley, the craddle of the famous Port wine and my second favorite place after the Minho mountains... And suddenly I realise how much I miss that place... Must go there one of these days!!!

A restful valley / Um vale repousante

A village stuck in the middle of a valley, between hills of rough stone almost intimidating, and yet how relaxing for the eyes to look at the green surrounding fields... Must not have been easy to turn an ocean of stone into a staircase of fertile land, but the ancestral people's skills have accomplished this feat without a single machine. There was a time when the action of man on the landscape was of no damage, Man and Nature in a team work for mutual benefit. Those times are far gone.

Green, stone, freedom / Verde, pedra, liberdade

One more mountain landscape, my favorite subject by now: I like the marriage between the intensive green of the grasses and the roughness of the stone, and all the endless textures that allow greater freedom ... I can not separate the word "freedom" of these landscapes where the horizons are wide and animals get around loosely. Maybe also because I've been a lot on these places when younger, camping here and there, and have experienced a feeling of freedom I know that will ever feel again. Curious, isn't it? We spend our life working to have "things", and when we look back, some of the happier and free moments in our lives are those when we were far from them or from having them ...

A small church / Pequena igreja

Few things are so distinctive in Minho than the small churches that can be found everywhere: Just go up a hill not too high and count them, because there will be certainly many on the horizon, small white dots among the green fields and scattered houses. Here we see one in the quietness of a sunny afternoon. As the front square is the meeting point for everyone, no wonder that in the front yard a decorative viewpoint was installed: There was a time when the "mirante" was the "TV" that would show the world closer, the one of the village centre: The one that really interested.

Vale Vistoso farm / Quinta do Vale Vistoso

By its light, colors and painting pleasure, this "Vale Vistoso - Dressy Valley - farm" became one of my favorites, allowing me a brief moment of immodesty hopefully ephemeral, as it is my wish to do more and better in the future. But just like the success of a great cookery depends on the quality of its ingredients, also searched among the best I know to be inspired: The landscapes, horizons and colors of the Minho province, the beautiful traditional houses, and the afternoon light that floods everything, that same light I always miss so much during the long months of Autumn and Winter...

A small town / Pequena vila

A gray and wet day doesn't make less interesting the landscapes of the Atlantic stripe north of Porto, with its small towns of colorful houses and fertile fields across gentle slopes. Those places inspired me to this "balloon view" of an imaginary town somewhere along the now closed Póvoa de Varzim - Famalicão railway.

The awakening / O despertar

I've been suffering from “mountain nostalgia” these days, images of their countless wonderful places coming across my mind at any time, so something like this had to come out...
It was also a chance to take a step forward in a path I wanted to follow more often: Working faster and more loosely, with more focus on light and atmosphere than on small details. More to come on this subject in the future.

Anxiously standing at the front of his house and staring the bottom of the path that gives it access, we might ask what this good man is waiting for... To say the truth, maybe he doesn't wait anything at all, his attention being catched by something for a second while he was just enjoying the pleasant shadow of the vines.

A world of backyards / Um mundo de quintais

Curious houses in economic neighborhoods: They start to be all equal, being "configured" over the years according to their tenants living. Their backyards, for example: Some have vegetable plots grown with care, from where always something is taken to the table, some others are mere piles of weeds and junk, others have exquisite gardens, others a little of all this, not to mention those who aren't anything, totally and lazily cemented... Small and so different worlds, with only a wall to separate them.

It is not because ine day starts covered by clouds that the mountain villages become less beautiful ... We lose the brightness and heat of the sun, but get an increase in the beauty of the textures of the stone, both in the houses and on the slopes, and its contrast with the very intense green of the fields around.
