Winding roads / Estradas sinuosas

Lovely stretches of road snaking around the slopes, surrounded by colors made alive by the humidity of a Winter day... I could name a dozen and half of counties in northern Portugal where you can find those little pictures that makes you want to browse at leisure, watching the endless details, breathing in the fresh air and listening to the always present water, especially in these days when entire rivers fall from the skies... I keep repeating myself, I know!
Enfim, estou sempre a repetir-me, bem sei!

Conviviality / Convívio

An old stone cross can be very useful, especially if it has some steps where two or three people can sit... Join the nearby tavern, a bench strategically placed to offer a shelter from sun or weather, plus the porch of a typical house where conviviality and intimacy are wisely balanced, and conditions are created for a place where conversations flourish. Hope is that the clouds that creep around do not put an end to this enjoyable moment in the life of a village... Conversations flourish, but don't need to be watered.

Stone in the mountains, stone in the houses / Pedra nos montes, pedras nas casas

This is one of my favorite works. Extremely simple, was perhaps the quickest to paint until today, and also one of the most enjoyable. I was about to call it "Life among the stones II”, because it represents a reality which is similar to the work such titled before, but I confess that I do not like these "sequel-titles"...
In what concerns to the rugged beauty of the stone villages, also a thousand times - but never enough - mentioned here, I won't add anything for that same reason, except perhaps how much I miss visiting them, a desire that already existed, and have grown since.

Everything is useful: Even the oranges the wind has stolen from their trees.

How are my broad beans today? / Como estão hoje as minhas favinhas?

Hardly the morning has emerged, and the nice gardener rushes to see how advanced is the growth of the broad beans planted early Autumn ... His expectation is understandable, because there isn't anything such as own-grown broad beans, which will come to the table by May, far more bigger and tastier than their ridiculous and stunted frozen relatives from the supermarket... Wouldn't be with these last that the great Eça de Queiroz could build one episode so memorable as the one of the famous rice with broad beans that tore out the poor Jacinto de Tormes from years of bad and lavish eating in his masterpiece "The City and the Mountains" .

The childhood place / O lugar da infância

Not much time of daylight left in a sunny Sunday afternoon, so the three characters - four in fact, if we include the friendly feline - take advantage of the moment to enjoy the scenery, talking about what the eye can reach... I do not know what they talk, but I estimate that the old couple shall dwell in that little house where also have grown their son who visits them in the weekend, and is preparing to return to the city where he now lives and works, sighing already for the next time he may come back and revisit places and people.

The brief morning sun, warming the stones of this rough yard, is enough for the enjoyment of half-dozen cats, so they can take a rest of their busy life checking their territory, and hunting the abundant creatures lurking in countless holes, wineries, barns, yards, fields, etc.. I'm one of those who believe that cats are one of the greatest contributions to human happiness and, for that reason I offer them, at least within these small rectangles of paper, a life far more cheerful and carefree than they often get before them in the real world.

Coming back home / De volta p'ra casa

Here's another work whose title I borrowed from an old music I like ...
The old couple returning home by the only access path to his village, reminds me of some remote places where you still come and go this only way, as well as others that are only recently accessible by a vehicle, often by roads packed with uncertain and frightening curves... The difference is that these places have seen departures more often than returns, and are now almost empty if not empty at all. The smoke, the distant silhouette, the barking and shouting of other animals, among other signs of life that seem to greet and welcome those who return - at least this is how it happens in the romantically distorted imagination of this city dweller - then certainly gave the place to the gradual decline of buildings, and an impressive silence, only broken by the running water.
